Painting brake calipers - now painted :-)

nope, different products mate...

Deox C is a crystalline, 100% active corrosion removal product formulated for the removal of corrosion products from steel, stainless steel and most ferrous materials. When you pain tit on, it gets into all the little nooks and crannies and removes any trace of rust etc from the calipers....

I wouldn't normal tale my disks and pads off, but I was changing them over at the time...

The M already has a black coating on them rather than the unpainted finish my previous Z had.

What are these brake calliper covers you guys keep mentioning? I was planning on repainting but they seem to look better and easier?

I did a bit of reading on them & searching last night just to be sure I want to paint not cover... Do a search for Brembo BMW Z4 brake covers on eBay, loads pop up... There is another manufacturer of aluminium ones in the US but they are about £150 and look a bit muscle car to my eye. Don't seem to be any other options than those two though.

There are lots of different opinions about the covers - they are easy to put on, cheaper than painting, reduce brake dust on the wheels for example... On the flip side I have seen some opinions that say they trap heat in around the caliper and actually increase the amount of dust and dirt that stays in around the calipers and pads themselves - neither of which sound good. That said, I am sure they are no problem under normal driving conditions.

I just don't want to get them - I'd rather have the satisfaction of cleaning them up and painting them myself, as well as the hubs like in cueball's photo above. They look ace, hope mine are even half as good...

Apart from a jetwash, I didn't prep, remove or clean my rear callipers & hubs, just masked the disk with a bit of newspaper and sprayed with Halfords silver Calliper paint.
Sound like a recipe for disaster I know, it took all of 1 min. But I promise u it looks the Muts Nuts, and having done this before on a previous MR2 it will still look great in 2 years time.
Don't bother wasting too much time on a project like this.

ESP, lol, just come in to have lunch and post a progress update after pretty much 3 hours... Having completed one side :lol:

To be honest I am just taking my time as I have never done this before. Cleaned and prepped them as much as possible without breaching my boredom threshold, 2 coats of hammerite now on, waiting for it to dry a bit before refitting the wheels.

Bit annoyed I got some paint on the brake pads :x

However, looking sweet so far. After lunch wheels back on and onto the other side... Though the weather forecast on BBC just said there's rain coming so I better pull the finger out.

Looks great bing. Wish id done mine in a standard colour and in hammerite, that stuff I used is a two part and it hardens so if you dont get them all done it hardens and each needed 3 coats and 24hrs to dry before re-applying. The paint was rubbish as it hardens it gets gloopy the finish is awful.

But I had to be different didnt I... they dont do hammerite in orange. Re-did them in may and took me an age to get the first lot off with a dremmel complete pain in the ass. Still not happy with them but cant be bothered to do them again.

Rain has stopped play :x

Car is up on jack and stands with two wheels off, calipers all cleaned and ready to paint... Hope it stops soon or I'll have to bang the wheels back on and start again another day. Which is worrying because the off side will be 20bhp more powerful than the near side till I get them done so the handling will be a nightmare...

To top it all, my lovely clean car has now been rained on so will look crap tomorrow

Not impressed. I don't react well to being prevented from finishing a job, even by God. Additionally, Mrs Bing wasn't going to tolerate me taking another half day later in the week to do the other side. Necessity is of course the mother of invention so in response I went camping, as you do...

I am a genius

Took a bit longer doing one wheel at a time, and dinner got in the way... But finally all finished. The results are not perfect, but I am well chuffed with how they have turned out and they pass the 'do they look good from 4 feet away' test. They've just added a wee finishing touch to the car IMO :
