Overheating

Hi all, after some help.

I have a 17 plate E89 20l N20 engine with 26k miles. The car has been driving fine until the other day when I went out and after 30 mins driving I started to lose power and the yellow temperature warning light came on and the cooling fan was running at maximum. I managed to get home and scanned it, the fault came up

Engine Cooling System: Coolant Pump Speed Outside Of Tolerance

I monitored the coolant temperature and it was running at 88 degrees before rising to 118 degrees after the fan kicked in at full speed then back to 88 degrees.

If I drive at low speeds the temperature cycles from 88 to 95 degrees, but if I drive at a constant higher speed the temperature can read up to 118 degrees and the yellow warning comes on.

Do you think the water pump is at fault?
Seems odd for a car with such low mileage

Any help please.

I'd say the electric water pump has failed. Not uncommon. It might be low mileage but its eight years old.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, I carried out the self bleed and water seemed to be circulating fine, however, it doesn't mean its within its parameters

I'm afraid I'm no expert on those engines to guide you any further. Others on here will jump in soon I'm sure.

I see you posted it in many places..were you not happy with the solutions offered elsewhere?

Hi, I posted it on 2 BMW Z4 sites on Facebook, I was told it was possibly a water pump and secondly, the only solution offered was to carry out a self bleed, which I did from the advice given, but it was the same.
The car is booked into a BMW specialist on 15th Oct, so in the mean time asking around to see if anyone else had the same problem, and I'm always happy for any input or advice.

Coolant pump failure on a N20 at that mileage seems strange.

However the codes indicate that it’s in the incipient stage of failure.

The DME is reporting that the pump is not responding correctly to the commanded instructions..

Could be a freak event…

If it is failing then it’s most likely to let you down when trashing it…on N52/N54 they fully fail often about 2-5k miles after first issues reported.

Thanks mate, looks like a new pump and thermostat, any idea how much to replace by a specialist, ball park figure.
Again appreciate your help.

Decent pump and thermostat is around £400 ish…plus labour…should be an easier job on E89 N20 lots of room..say 3 hours..

Will be intersecting to see what the garage says..

Just an update on my overheating problem, the car went into BMW specialist yesterday and confirmed water pump, new pump fitted, all good.
Thnx …as I suspected…usual on a n20 to fail so early..
