Overheating Diagnosis

Hi,

Driving along in my Facelift e85 Roadster approx. 90K on A3 last night when I hear beep and look down to see temperature gauge on the max. Pulled over as quickly as could, Water leaking on to the road below, looked like from the cap. Had it trailered back to my house.

Looking at Forum it appears most likely to be Water Pump so will order one up for mechanic to fit however this morning I put it in bleed mode and it made all the right sounds and also when up to temperature fan came on. Diagnostic codes using generic code reader showed Injectors 1,2,3 and 6 as Voltage in onboard electrical system > 10v Terminal 15, Engine On Injector Control Monitor. Check wiring, Repair if defective. If wiring OK proceed to check component.

Just wondered if had any other thoughts and indeed if the two issues are connected. Should say car was running absolutely fine before this.

On another note I assume you fill coolant through radiator cap although struggling to get it off in this rain.

Cheers
for any help.

The bleed process is a fair drain on the battery without the engine running & connecting a charger during this time would assist.
That maybe why you got the 10v warning? A more sophisticated code reader may shed more light on the pump although at that mileage it’s not unexpected & can’t see what else would cause overheating like that.
I wouldn’t be keen to drive it again as overheating is best avoided on these engines.

Thanks Rob I appreciate the reply. The car was running during the bleed process.
I wont drive it to my mechanics, fortunately the breakdown people said they would come back when I'm ready and take it over to him.

Cheers

As long as there was coolant in (i.e expansion tank not cracked) it will be the pump for sure.

Thanks I've ordered the Pump and thermostat but will check the expansion tank when weather better tomorrow.

I'm not so sure of that.. I also have an e85 facelift and had a very similar issue (although mine does not have an electric pump), I was almost sure it was the pump or thermostat, it wasn't, it was a huge airlock trapped deep within the system.

I'd also advise check all pipes first for any splits/cracks and feel as to whether there is liquid circulating through the system by checking certain pipes. You can manaually diagnose by doing this, my mechanic ran me through how he's been diagnosing these types of issues for 40 years. This was how I knew it must be an airlock (or something way more sinister like a blown gasket). In the end it took parking it on a hill opening the rad cap and reving the sh1t out of it for 10 minutes holding a 5L water bottle over the expansion tank to add pressure. A volcano of bubbles erupted and all has been fine ever since. Seems a little drastic but did the trick!

I remember doing that on a Fiesta 20 years ago! Ok I will give it a good check over tomorrow.

Well I guess we should indeed ask which engine the OP has. If it’s N52, it will be waterpump.

The fact he put it in bleed mode suggests it is indeed an n52 variety

...bit then said that the engine was running when in bleed mode, which is not possible on N52. Go figure?

Well just to update, yes it is the N52, my attempt at putting it in bleed mode clearly had no effect as waterpump broken. Mechanic fitted pump and thermostat today, put in bleed mode expansion tank happily filled and all is well. £270 for parts from https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-1-3-5-7-X-Z-N52-N52N-N53-Petrol-Engs-Electric-Waterpump-Thermostat-7586925/372620213870?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649, £20 Coolant and £65.00 labour so £355 all in.

Thanks for help as ever.

Cheers
