Oven Light Cover - Mission accomplished

Hi all,

Any bright ideas please how I can free off a glass oven lamp cover :? I was messing around for nearly an hour earlier trying to unscrew the damn thing but it appears have welded itself into place and wont budge by hand. I've tried heating it up and giving some sharp blows to no avail so I need something that will give enough grip to crack it free and unscrew it.

I was thinking of some long handled pipe wrench grips but with it being glass I think they will just slip off. Its location doesn't help either.

Annoying to say the least as I thought it would take 30 seconds to change the bulb :x

Cheers,

Tim.

Just a thought, but have you tried to remove it wearing a rubber glove - you'll get much more grip on the glass.

I have yes thanks, I tried with all my might but it would budge at all. I tried a wrench but it kept slipping off and didn't want to try too much pressure in case it shattered it.

I'm wondering if this might do it https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Multi-Purpose-Adjustable-Rubber-Strap-Wrench-Grip-Tighten-Bottle-Jar-Opener/231365270329?hash=item35de71db39:g:6o4AAOSwajVURVJ8

Just need something that will provide grip and leverage.

Baking soda  leave it to soak in and will dissolve the deposits around the glass, you don't want to use grips, it likely be toughened and just shatter

Edit - just had a thought, how about a jar opener

I'd use a pipe wrench on that! - couldn't move the one in our oven a couple of years back so applied the wrench as a last resort. Warning though it didn't turn it just shattered but at least all the bit fell out of the thread. You might want to order a replacement from somewhere like espares before you do the deed (as an insurance policy) and wait until it arrives! Easter weekend may not be the time to be ovenless.

Good luck! - if anyone knows the proper way to do this I'd love to know

Their are quite a few videos on youtube on how to remove an oven light cover. Some ovens makes have a tool for the purpose. One tip given was to spray a little wd40 artound the seal and allow a few minutes then retry to unscrew.

Had to do this a few weeks back and used a small block of wood and tapped it round with a hammer. Soon came loose

Thanks guys, I've ordered one of these https://www.amazon.co.uk/BOA-11022-Baby-Soft-Grip/dp/B002HMRU34/ref=sr_1_1?s=diy&ie=UTF8&qid=1522354063&sr=1-1&keywords=boa+small+strap+wrench

You can get a tool specific for the job but only Bosch/Siemens seem to make them, mines a Hotpoint.

I'll will give it a soak as well with some baking soda as suggested before trying the strap. Won't WD40 stink the oven when cooking :D

Failing that I'll smash it with a hammer and get a new cover :)

Right pain :|

When my bulb went I bought a kit off eBay which included bulb new glass and tool to remove the glass.

Try tapping it with a lump of wood, it worked for me :)

Thanks bobby, tried that, I gave it a right whollop, up down, left to right when it was hot but still wouldn't budge. I keep the oven pretty spotless so I think its the heat over time thats made it stubborn to free off rather than cooking crap.

Sort of suggests a highish failure rate that even with a removal tool they provide a new glass! - makes me feel better about shattering mine when I did it.

It will go Tim, mine suddenly moved and then it unscrewed easily. It did take some bashing and I thought it was going to break but it suddenly released.

Might be stating the obvious, but it hasn’t got a metal clip holding it in place has it ?

I know some ovens have a spring clip, but had a quick look through the manual and this one just screws off, usually

I was whacking it for ages so gave up and threw some burgers in and put me feet up :)

There are gizmos available for removing jam pot lids silicon/rubber - that should give you the grip and leaverage your need!

You’ve also reminded me that the lamp in ours failed a while back.

A pipe wrench will just smash the glass as the jaws are designed to clamp into the pipe to get good purchase.

I’d leave the pipe wrench in the tool box, smash the glass with a hammer and use pump pliers to grip an edge of the metal part.

Ouch!

I think john-e89 may be a bit tender at the rear after seeing that.
