OT : What do you do for a living?

I practice business/corporate law and civil litigqtion. But interestingly enough, with my firm's political connections, I was appointed a Special Prosecutor and I prosecute DUIs for the municipalities our firm represents.

I love going to work.... No day is never the same.....

Spent 24 years in the US Navy's Submarine Force.

I am a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, Redhat Linux System Engineer and a Cisco Network Engineer, along with a EE degree.

Retired from the Navy four years ago as a Chief Fire Control Technician and was hired on by Fleet Technical Support Center Atlantic (FTSCLANT). Now known as MidAtlantic Regional Maintenance Center (MARMC). Those in the service call us 'TechReps', but the job title is 'Submarine Combat Systems Electrical/Computer Engineer'. Our sections primary job it to go around the world to the boats (Submarines) to 'assist' the crew in repairing their systems. Seldom does "assist" come into play. Since the draw down, the Navy completely changed their training so 99% of the time, they don't have a clue, we have to do it... Not all their fault... but that is a topic for a different thread. :headbang:

In addition to the 'TechAssists', we also remove and install new systems. This does two things. Allows the ships to be updated with newer technology and keep us Techs current on those new systems. You really don't know how something works until you have to take it apart and put it back together, and make it work. We have to ripout the old systems, then the shipyards and other entities do the mechanical installation (structural updates eg. welding, install new cabling, and piping for cooling water). After that is done we take the new equipment, disassemble it, load the pieces onboard, reassemble, then test and fix anything that does not work. Either the faults are something that just broke or a design issue... We call this 'on the deckplate systems integration and design'. If its a design issue, then we normally have to come up with a fix.
Not only are we the system experts on the Fire Control System, we have to know about all the other systems. The FCS is now the main data bus for all those other systems. eg. Sonar, Navigation, Radar, Periscope Data, ESM etc... The manta is: It's broke, must be a Fire Control problem. Then we have to go prove that the issue is their problem, and most of the time recommend a solution..... :headbang:

There is way more to what we do, but that is the Readers Digest version.

Here are some pictures of my last install. All unclassified.... poor quality on purpose....

New consoles installed.

The big black console on the end is existing equipment called Command Launch Console. It talks to the Weapons Launch Equipment (WLE) in the Torpedo Room.

The server racks, called MultiFunction Servers (MFS's) . Both MFS-1 and 2. Both exactly the same for redunency and fallover.
For you techie's, there is Cat5, GigE over copper, 10Gig copper and fiber and copper cabling (Serial and NTDS) from each piece of equipment.

The torpedo room with part of the WLE on the right. Yes, thats a torpedo tube on the left.

The WLE, affectionately called the Wall Of Death. Because we are always working in the damn thing....

0217080641.jpg

Thats the install side, here it the 'TechAssist' side. One of the WLE's drawers had a problem. After hours of highly technical trouble shooting, we found 45 burnt wires on the backplane. Had to fix it....
Took us three days to do it. Everything is wirewrapped, three layers deep... :sorcerer: All that damage, and it only took out two circuit cards. Amazing....

Fluff pictures. Wide shot of the torpedo room with a test shape.

Yes, there are seats for the crew, but have been removed for the maintenance period.

We also do all the Weapons Testing. Torpedoes and Tomahawks...

And of course a shot of the Zed in the parking lot.

I aspire to be a Greeter at WalMart someday. I love smiling and saying HI to people. And chicks dig the vest. In the mean time I fly the jets that aebous maintains and trust the instruments that ovrkll installs in them... wow, when I say it that way I wonder if I'm sane :headbang:

I am a Mississippi River ship Pilot.

I pilot any kind of ship that comes in the Mississipppi River.

Every port in the world has pilots. The pilot has all of the local knowledge.
They are the person who boards the ship and basically tells them were to go.
Now that is a kewl job and that has got to be one of the few job that has been around for what...150 plus years?

Actually been around since before Christ, There were pilots in ancient Egypt.
When the first US congress convened there were 5 bills, one of them had to do with pilotage and interstate commerce.

Here on the river at least 150 years.

Even submarines use local pilots when going into port.

At the risk of sounding like the *dumbest* one here, I'm an PSO - Public Safety Officer. I am a certified Firefighter, Police Officer and Paramedic...with many, many hobbies :D

For a good 10 years I held two jobs - a really fun one that paid lousy and an occasionally rewarding, but often pedestrian one that paid well. Care to guess which one lasted... oh well.

1990 - 2000: Instructor/Owner, Ventura County Hang Gliding
1988-present: Laser Hack, Boeing

Sigh.

I'm an industrial designer. I designed cell phones for Motorola in the past. Now I'm a structural designer that focuses on the secondary packaging for Coca Cola. I have a few other secondary customers. But Coke is my primary responsibility. I also freelance and do some packaging for the toy company Kids II.

thought we had a similiar thread to this but oh well what the heck. i'm turning 26 in a month and i work for a major investment bank. it is by far the most unexciting job ever.

Software Analyst for a software house based in West London (Chiswick) writing software for the Credit Scoring industry/banks, so yeah 'spose that counts as IT.

I hate to say she's terribly good looking, knows it, plays on it, figure to die for, pretty clever, but expensive and high maintenance.

Mostly seen when needs cash, undisturbed sleep time, or her car working on for free. Will be glad when she and her equally expensive sister are both off the payroll

How did you pull that off? Normally someone has to die to get in........

2 jobs. 1 boring and 9 - 5 that pays the mortgage and bills and 1 enjoyable part time that buys the toys!! :D

9 - 5 I work for a company as their IT administrator/engineer and also do the Technical Authoring (manager) for the user manuals for the vehicles the company build.

Part time at evenings and weekends I am a fitness instructor. :D I taught martial arts for 11 years at my own clubs, but slowly got more into the fitness industry so sold the clubs on.

I suppose I have a split occupation. Half the week I sell furniture which is really boring but brings in the £££. The rest of the time I build and maintain race cars and do pit work which doesn't earn me much in comparison but it pays for the mods and general upkeep of the Alpina and I love doing it.

I started out as an aerospace engineer engineer in the 80s and 90s (I worked on a variety of systems for the space station). I did the dot-com thing with a startup Internet business (and even managed to hang in there for quite a while after the market turned into "dot-bomb"). Currently I am the IT Director for a consumer goods company. Not the most interesting job I ever had, but my kids are starting college soon, so ...
