Options you wished you hadnt bothered with

so what extra functionality does the Audi system have over the BMW one, as for usability I'm unsure how the BMW system could be simpler, different of course but simpler no

Once you get over the feeling of not being in control, cruise becomes one of the best options you can have. However there is one downside, you soon notice how hard it is for other people to control a stable speed on the motorway
I had it on a previous motor - infuriating the number of cars that overtake, pull in and then slow down!

Cruise is pretty useless on the congested uk roads, well unless you have a car with a cruise radar system. But an absolute blessing on the northern french motorways. I managed to go well over a hundred miles before I had to disengage (toll!)

sars - do you have to switch yours on? On the Audi, you select the + to get the cruise on. On the BMW, you had to switch the system on first - then set the speed which is a two step approach.

The E70 cruise is lovely, it also leaves a red dot on the speedo at the set speed if active, or green if not.

E89 is the same. Just push forward to activate (at that speed). Nice dot on speedo, that also changes colour when temporarily unset.

PVR, The Merc is the same as BMW, just move the stork to engage, up or down with Mercedes and push or pull for BMW, both have two increments 1mph and 5 mph. The position of the stork is a little awkward on the Mercedes, above the indicator (though moved at the face lift similar in position as BMW), where the BMW is right where you want it near you hands. Also the BMW if you push it all the way forward and hold the car accelerates quicker which I liked. The Mercedes has a speed limiter function so that it will stay below a certain speed no matter how much you press the accelerator, but I've never used it.

Quite nice when you press resume too :)

Used it once so far (On my fetch journey)

All trips since then have been on my a/b road commute - no need for cruise there :D

Not a Z, but I specced the extended digital display (forget what it is called now) on my 1 Series, and tbh I'm a bit underwhelmed. All it really does is give a digital display of the bloody economy meter that BMW always fitted to their cars, and which I hated anyway

Should have gone for the black roof lining instead.

Surprised about some people not using the cruise control in the UK. I went to the effort of retrofitting it to my old E36 and spec it on every car I buy now, I use it all the time and find it makes a huge difference to mpg. Yes I eed to turn it off every 5 minutes, but even so it adds a level of convenience. And, on an automatic gearbox,I find it even more of a godsend.

The sport button is fairly pointless,

Surprised by this....are you sure yours is working? I love the sport button, great for countryside blasts, but is good to have it turned off when pootling around town.

I wouldn't swap my electric memory seat, as Mrs R and I have totally different settings.

Just in case she sees this, Mrs R is an essential mandatory component :D

Yep works fine, you can instantly tell the throttle has responded when you press it. I just press the accelerator further if i want to go faster

Works the same way on the X3 but, as the system has three different ways of activating the cruise speed, I've recoded the SET button to activate the LIM function, this acts as a soft speed limiter and you set your maximum speed using the cruise rocker and speedo marker - very useful when in an urban area with lots of speed cameras. The limiter is 'soft' because you can override it by pressing harder on the throttle so it doesn't stop purposeful acceleration if needed

The odd thing is that the LIM functionality exists in the F25's systems but there is no way of accessing it without a bit of coding

Ah OK, I find it very helpful, especially with things like rev-matching heel-toeing and feathering the throttle when exiting corners...adds to the experience in a huge way for me #Longlivethesportbutton

Thats exactly what I mean about electric seats , they are good if you swap drivers all the time but if its only you that drives it would be played with once until a position was found and then never touched again.

The elec memory seats are a bit of a half hearted measure in the Z , i appreciate they can be programmed with the remote but to be a properly functioning asset to the car they should be as with a 6 series or the average Lexus
Blip of the remote & the seats, the mirrors & the steering wheel all set to each drivers programmed choice
Have enjoyed all the tricks in past cars but don't miss much tbh , heated steering wheel in deepest winter was a true luxury that always made me smile & auto open boot when approaching with arms fully laden , otherwise i'm happy if it run's well
I think one of my favourite "extras" is the exterior headlights or foglights coming on when you approach & press unlock so when in dark places you can see whats what & also voice command to change CD or dial from phonebook

Cruise and electric seats are a must if your driving in Europe , I bought a car specifically with both for that reason , off the tunnel and cruise set to 130 kph , seat pushed back a bit and relax :D though I do have 8 hours in front of me from there
And I do it a few times a year there and back as well as the ten hour trip to Germany :driving:

Yes, that's surprising. I've always found the sport button to give a nice boost.
