At that price, I'l stick with keeping my finger on the button.. :P
Once you’ve had a smarttop that logic goes out the window!

So, forgive my ignorance on this subject, but for all that money, what does it do other than changing the button action to a single press?

The main selling point is being able to open or close the roof whilst driving up to 20-30mph and being able to close the roof remotely from outside the car. No more stuck at traffic lights when they have changed to green because you're putting the roof up/down :D

Watch this video to see some of the things the SmartTop can do https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8xEpxiBNwQ

I can still close my roof, or put down up to about 20mph without smarttop. So seems the only benefit, is the lack of a finger press. Im sure its good but would expect more like £20 :)

This is how I’ve got mine configured:-

Function 1 = 1 on
Function 2 = 1 one touch buttons
Function 3 = 1 windows up
Function 4 = 4 is 40kph or 25mph
Function 5 = 1 1 touch windows up
Function 6 = 3 Auto fold @ lock/unlock
Function 7 = 2 unlock doors ign off
Function 8 = 0 switch invert
Function 9 = 0 seq unlock
Function10 = 0 fac window remote

The roof up or down from the key fob is the main advantage for me. I have a bit of of a mobility issue so the roof thing is a real bonus.

Thanks, a comprehensive answer.
I can see how that would help ingress and egress for you too.

My 2014 manual tells me 40 KPH / 25 MPH. i had in my head i read 40 MPH, so good job i just double checked.

Also it mentions air turbulance in the boot, so if you dont want to lose your homework, do not operate on the move

Smart top or etc device is must for me on any cabrio. So much more convenient. You do have to have good battery to operate without car running. First my top refused to operate with old battery while car was off, but with new battery zero problems. Still car was working, starting etc just fine.

I still would advice to rather operate while running and halt or very slow speeds. Just that privilege to do it when, starts raining, trafic starts moving or you are in hurry and just want it to close while locking. Or just to look cool 8)

I wanted to look cool last week at the car meet, I said to my buddy "Look - watch this" pressed the fob several times, nothing? Pressed it harder time and time again - Nothing? We waited .........He said I gotta go  :( :|
Realized I had not put the divider thing down in the trunk :headbang:
So looking cool turned to looking fool

But it does work good when you do it right.

If someone gifts it to me, I'll have it otherwise I'll use my fingers and keep the cash in my pocket. LOL.

You can’t hurt the roof as it won’t operate in excess of that speed

I’m told that the code to operate the roof is well hidden and not accessible and as such, very unlikely to be re coded by Carly etc . A BMW dealer attempted to modify my system and was unable to do so.
As I really need a fob controlled roof - Smarttop was my only option

Some time ago I saw on YouTube someone code it on an E93, if I remember correctly the chap was based somewhere in London. I called him and asked him if he could do the same for the E89 since they are very similar system, he told me it maybe possible but he would have to check on the car and see, which would have been great if myself and the car was still in London but sadly I am here and have no plans to drive back to London anytime soon.

I feel more relaxed with an add on unit - more so than having command codes changed - I Can unplug the unit - but codes???? That’s witchcraft I tell you - witchcraft!

I agree that the units are quite expensive but they sell very easily, especially on this forum so not a great loss overall

SmartTop + or - 400€
It's expensive

No one has managed to code to do this for free ? :headbang:

Free? You're frustrated because it isn't free?
Yes I like challenges and I think it must be possible but for the moment I have not yet found the solution.
