Only in America

At the risk of alienating some of our friendlier colonial cousins, I have just read a BBC report that during the month of March 3.7 million applications to hold firearms were submitted in the USA, a 32% increase over normal.

This raises a few queries:
What do they suddenly all need guns for? To join battle in the great toilet paper wars of 2020?
Are they expecting an alien invasion, while we are all weakened by the virus?
How on earth do they accept 2.8 million applications as a 'normal' month? :o

Perhaps Scootr, who seems to be level-headed enough to apply to be an honorary Brit, could explain? :D

Brits like to be prepared to wipe their arses
Yanks like to prepare to wipe out each other  :D

Nope stop right there I’m not having that....!! Scootr takes the p**s out of the British weather and doesn’t moan about their weather...(ok I will concede there’s not much to actually moan about but he could always say it’s too hot or too perfect or how he’s bored of how fantastic it is I guess) No way will he ever be a Brit honorary or otherwise.....application retracted, end of. :topicclosed:

Sorry I'm late. Not sure I can explain this satisfactorily but - I'll give it a go - I apologize in advance if I offend
Guns & ammo... I admit to having had both in my home for 40 years. I've hunted. I've reloaded. I've killed foods & varmints. It's an American tradition. I'v shot trap and hid them in places for easy access against intrusion.
Gun ownership goes back 250 years - a citizen's right to bear arms is why we were able to free ourselves as a nation and that is why this right is written into our constitution. No army freed us - the citizens freed themselves with their hunting rifles. I know - I know. That was 250 years ago but our forefathers said it best. The people are armed to defend against invasion, participate in law enforcement, and safeguard against tyrannical government.

Back to why the run on guns in the in the face of the pandemic. People are freaking the f- out. They fear civilization will breakdown and criminals will try to take food, cash, or (God forbid) TP from them.
One friend has sold his stocks, pulled all his $ out of the bank before the collapse. It is the apocalypse mentality - stupid yes but, some will go there... digging shelter in the back yard, filling it with TP :D
It's a crazy mix right now of hermits and codgers holed up with guns and cash and young people acting like nothing is wrong. It's quite obvious something's very wrong. We need to bond together to make it though... Good news is the majority get it. As evidenced by the tapering off of infection rate. In fact worldwide we are tapering off the infection rate... except for a few small unfortunate places, the spread is decreasing statistically.
We are staying at home. We are using delivery services. We are maintaining distance. We are praying for one another's safety.
God Bless & Stay safe. We could all use a bit of Stay calm and Carry on right now

P.S. The weather is horrid here. Cold gloomy mornings and dam sun every day afternoon. :poke:

An excellently worded explanation. Thank you.

Note to some others, this was put clearly without any emotive uprising and without any personal slurs fired randomly around.
Whilst the content of the second paragraph is quite disturbing in places, it is an accurate description, plainly laid out.

John, I'm afraid I disagree with you and on the evidence presented in Scootr's post I shall be resubmitting his application for honorary Brit. He even got a weather reference in there.

Well it’s a tie @ 1 vote each Enuff....you don’t need me to tell you what that means. I submit an application for a very reasonable 24hr voting window which is damn generous considering he got a poking with a stick jibe in about the weather.... :x then it’s case closed. :P

Well, I was just thinking............. what are the chances of us finding the only American with a proper sense of humour? Surely we can't just cast him aside like an old sock?

Hmmmmm.....a reasonable question.....ok court will recess for 2 minutes for deliberation.

After deliberating the above question I retract my initial vote and find in favour of the applicant. Scootr....you’re in. Court adjourned. All rise.....

(Just go easy on the f*****g weather jokes right.... :poke: )

Highly enjoyable topic and no harsh words, congrats to all participants. As an aside, I also have a fear of breakdown of the law if jobs, cash and food etc become in short supply. Certainly expect the crime rate to go up.

Cheers. It's been fun so far. Just a shame the time difference kind of dampens the banter down a little.
