On a tangent: How many of you Roadster owners...

VERY interesting question.. I always loved the folding hard top. Some of you will be aare of the problems I've had with marks and bulges on my roof, none of which would have happened on a folding hard top...

That said, I love the ract or roof closes FAST, the amount of times I've popped the roof open at lights, I love it! Not bothered about the weight at all, but the saving in boot (trunk) space is pretty impressive!

So in conclusion, I WISH BMW would take care of their customers and ensure dodgy roofs get fixed, but I still prefer a soft top to a folding hard top.

Yep the MX-5 looks really slick, if only they made a more powerful version I could be tempted back (had 2 before).

Ive only seen 1 hard top MX5 since its been introduced.... Looks like they still do the Rag top as ive sen 56 and 07 plates all soft.

I would defo have the folding hard top... Seems a joke one company can do it but another cant...

Cheers

definitely wouldn't go with a straight coupe as i am addicted to roadsters. not saying anything negative about the coupe as it is a GREAT car!! same goes with the Cayman. but i would just go with the z4 roadster or boxter over their couple versions unless i was buying it as a track b!+ch. for everyday use, definitely would go with the roadster as it is just more fun to drive top down

hard top vert vs soft top vert is a tough call. there is something neat about having a soft top over you. like the sound of the rain when it hits, it's like you have an umbrella over you. i think it would come down to which is more reliable and how much cost difference. if all is equal, i might be persuaded towards the hard top vert, but i like having the pure RWD, 2 seater, soft top roady. pure, no gimmicks toy car 8)

May I suggest adding a poll? That'll give you some numbers to play with.

My answer to the question is NO. A removable hard top, although a great idea, would exceed my laziness tolerances. Also, what would I do if caught in the rain?

You could use the Hooter's t-shirts.... :P

My next door neighbor got the hard top miata. She didn't want to pay the Z4 price, so in her words, she picked second best. It's a cute little car, but i like my Z4. I saw my first top up 328i hardtop convertible today. Looked nice enough to me. I still need to see it top down though.

After having a roadster for over a year, I don't want to go back to a hard top anything really.

I have always been a fan of the coupe, that is what first attracted me to the Z brand way back when the Z3 M coupe came out. Then I saw and sat in the Z4M coupe at the Detroit auto show and was hooked.

Just beautiful.

Springtime came around and a great lease deal on the 3.0Si roadster w/sport package, color combo, price, everything I wanted except the M/// badge :| and could not resist. Since then I have come full circle I still love the coupe, so sexy, but now love my roadster and would not trade it for the coupe, a hardtop would make perfection.

I reckon that in the UK at least most of the CC's that are about are brought for the novelty factor rather than being brought by convertible owners wanting the advantages of a folding hardtop.
I read an artical in Autoexpress about cars that were brought as a fad such as the new bettle etc, it said the CC's such as the 206, 307 and Megane were just such a thing and were going to get a hammering on price now the noveltys worn off.

Hey guys your talking apples and oranges here, coupe or soft top, you know the feeling on a beautiful day and you drop the top down in 10 sexonds that was not a typo error...............the sun hitting your entire body , the wind, the sound, in a coup I don't care if your driving a 300k lambo or a 158k 911gt2 you will never have that feeling, my other car has a sunroof and before I bought the z4 I likeded it and now I'm looking at a hole in the ceiling...............top down is the best feeling, I also never thought I would buy a convertible living in quebec, but I drove it got hooked love it and drive it top up or down 8 months of the year. z4 coupe and ragtop are two different cars. Drive both and decide, make sure you try the z4 top down on a sunny day. Last note the z4 top up is good, nice cozy and warm pretty quiet.

p.s the z4 softop is a lot more solid then many hardtop cars. bullet proof steady and solid.

Well, I've got both a coupe and a roadster and I love driving top down, but I chose the coupe because it offers more possibilities than a convertible due to being somewhat more practical and being more accepted for track days. I'm not averse to a convertible as a daily driver (the 335i cab would be excellent for this), but going forward all my sports cars will be coupes.

Hardtop vs softtop convertable wasn't a huge issue for me. I do like the trunk space and whenever possible I drive top down anyway. :driving:

If all is equal, then i think a metal convert is a good idea, but thats never the case. Even with the Miata thats and additional 70 lbs on a small car. I personally like the look of the roadster top up or down, i think the cloth/canvas top gives it a real classy look as opposed to the plastic tops of yesterday. Nothing like crusing in a convertible with the music up and the top down, it a real "freedom machine"

Who says you can't drive topless in a Coupé?

Hell you could even ride bottom less!

That would be an interesting drive, even more so in a roadster . . .
