On a tangent: How many of you Roadster owners...

Great thread by GP20 to start off a healthy discussion: How many of you roadster owners wish you had got the coupe?

Without hijacking that thread, I had a question for those owners who have already posted on his thread...

How many of you Roadster owners WOULD HAVE gotten the Coupe if it came as a Hardtop Convertible? I'm curious to know, since I would have.
another good question Rick

Absolutely the coupe!!!!
A hard top roady would have been a real PORKER.... oink oink
& truck space with top down = non existent.

One of the reasons I bought this car for, is summer road trips.
That wouldn't be possible with a hard top vert.

If the $$$ diferrence is not substantially more than my ragtop - say < $3K US, I would defintely prefere the hardtop.
I know the Miata has a hard top version. The difference between the ragtop and hardtop is only about $800.

Meh, a hardtop convertible is neither here nor there. Hardtop OR convertible are the only options in my book.

i drove a new 330d convertible and loved it, but the boot is shocking... it's not even funny.

i make it a habbit never to regret a purchase (especially when it's 30 grands worth) and i definitely don't regret having one of the sexiest convertibles on the market which is also one of the fastest... =D

A slightly different view point, but as a Coupe owner I wouldn't have been interested in a Hardtop Convertible. If putting the roof down bothered me I'd have been quite happy with the Roadster :)

Love my Z4 Roadsters exactly like they are - a removable fiberglass hartop when we want it! Lots of room in the trunk!

We have been on road trips for up to 10 days in our Z4s. We learned to pack small, clean our clothes at Laundromats and ask " do you ship?".

Gotta have a trunk!

Best!
Jack

mmm - interesting thought.

This is where we get to infinite variations to a theme that suit some people. coupe, rag top, removable hard top, metal convertible, targa??

I like the Z4 just as it is, so on balance I'd keep what I have. Perhaps a few more years to get the true softop out of my system, although I can't count on that. I fancied a 4x4 and 10 years later have 3 of them

I won't buy the next model Z4 unless it has a folding hard top :D

The downsides -
- extra weight (not really noticeable though, is it)
- luggage space (not too bad, it's the sliding divider in the boot that really narrows the aperature when the roof is down)
- long time to lower the roof (almost 30 secs in the SLK)

Upsides -
- less road noise; feels much more rigid with the roof up than the Z4
- much better security (working in construction I don't have a choice which areas I have to drive into)
- when my cat sleeps on the roof it doesn't get hairy like the soft top used to

If it's a daily driver, or you have no garage (or both), it makes perfect sense.

The Mazda MX5 (Miata i ithnk) hardtop only adds 35kg in weight to the ragtop version. and the only space lost is the storage compartment behind the back seats, no boot space is lost over the ragtop, although the boot line is raised by 15mm near the back of the seats.

Why cant BMW use some of this engineering/design to produce a retractable hardtop that wont make the boot as useless ans the new 3 series hardtop, where only a first aid kit will fit if you want the roof down.

Yep the MX-5 looks really slick, if only they made a more powerful version I could be tempted back (had 2 before).

If it somehow worked out so that it would look like a coupe with the top up, and a roadster with the top down, I would definitely get it.

Wouldn't really be functional without trunk space AND with no back seat to put anything in. I like mine the way it is. 8)

How about just buying one of each :D

The way it is now. Very clean looking, hard surface when down, no covers needed to keep parts from showing, ( I like the covers we can get, however, a bit bothersum for me ).

Any loss of trunk space would keep me from having a folding hard top. The 3 series has the folding hardtop and I wonder if we then have more room in the trunk when the tops are down? The 3 series is even bigger than the Z.

I better start playing the lottery right now. :D

While the coupe is gorgeous, it's the roadster for me. I like the looks of the convertible top and until my top motor dies, i'm not going to complain at all!
