Olympic Torch Relay 2012

Every Olympics is named after the capital city - that's just 'tradition'. There are always events in other cities, but there has to be a focus if only for logistics sake. It's the largest public event in the world, bar none, and the number of people / events / associated activities and logistics is comparable to running 13 world cups at the same time over 2-3 weeks. Of course we could have the 'Thong (in Kent somewhere) Olympics', but it doesn't quite have the same ring to it... :D

The Games will bring lots of business to the UK, lots of (hopefully good) PR, and drive up interest in sport - tbh my doubt / concern is in the government being able to carry the 'legacy' beyond the games and make something worthwhile of it in the future, not least by re-using the infrastructure they have spent billions on.

We've had an invitation in the post from our dealers to go and 'have the chance to have our photo taken with the torch' as they will have it there for an hour or so.
Don't think we'll bother tbh!

They would out-dazzle each other! I don't think it will be outside would it? They'd have it in the showroom.

Sorry Bing but your opening statement isn't correct. For a start Australia's capital city is Canberra, not Sydney... ;-)

Tourism is a mixed bag, bookings for regional holidays are down because the London 'Olympic premium' hotel prices have prevented quite a few visitors from breaking their journey in London, (LHR > London > provinces), and so they have opted to come another year.

Many businesses have been displaced through compulsory purchase in the Olympic Park and some reports have claimed that not all of them have moved successfully, actually reducing employment opportunities in East London.

Greece is the place for the Olympics. The seven billion would have helped them more than us. It was a vanity project.

Blimey what a bunch of miseries you lot are!!

Why have them? Well there is the £7bn of much needed boost to the economy in constructing the venues/infrastructure, there's the jobs that were created in doing so, there's the big boost to tourism, not just during the games but afterwards, and lastly it isn't all in London either you know! Oh and also that lots of people will get the chance to see top class athletes on their doorstep.

I'm not a huge Olympics fan but surely all but the most biased can see the benefits.

Dont see any benefit of it here in Scotland.... No new venue, no jobs, no boost in tourism. I work in sport and see no benefits. I hope that London Transport people go on strike and show Seb Coe, David Cameron and all their slimey cronies how it is.

Show me how it benefits me, I'll change my mind.

I stand corrected

However, it is always named after a major city, and in a country the size of ours it was always going to be London.
