Oil usage

I see the 35i engine still uses a little of the black stuff after a while! Heading to 11,000 miles now and checked it last night. Was on 3/4 on the gauge when I got the car and now reads just over 1/2, so not much, but still used some.
My 3.0si Coupe used it also.

Breaker, where is this gauge? I looked all through the manual and under the hood,.... nothing

I think that there may be a misunderstanding. I believe the oil "level" is an alarm that comes in from the computer and the oil "usage" is the life expectancy of the oil based on your driving habits as determined by the computer. The cars "use " very little oil but they wear it out and fill it with pollutants over time. Now I understand Breakers comment about 3/4 down to 1/2. My Z3 had rows of lights that slowly went from green to orange to red, my M3 had a digital readout, my chev has an Oil life % that comes up on the dash at start up. I don't worry about it too much 'coz I swap the oil every year in them and don't ever reach the lifespan of the oil (as figured by the computer, usually around 22 - 25k km)

There is a digital oil level gauge in the trip computer. On the L/H stalk there is a small switch that moves up or down. This toggles the display on the speedo. Toggle this when driving (the engine has to be moving and warm) until Oil Level is shown then press the end of the stalk to select. It shows a digital oil dipstick on the display.

Awesome, I haven't found that yet...

I thought I had discovered all there was.....sitting stil. It only shows up when moving ? I'll need to go for a drive,

I think it's temp related. If you have been out and sit still with the engine running it will still show. Had similar on my last Z4.

Thanks. That's what I feared. The rft, numb electric power steering and lack of a dipstick appear to be deliberate efforts to drive me from the BMW fold forever, after having owned 14 or more of them. Oh well...

You can't. No input in the engine casting!

Just a bit of info.

My Z4 has just hit 13,800 miles and the warning to add a litre of oil came on today! The car gets quite a bit of hard use so I'm not surprised. Think it's within the BMWs tolerances.

BMW's tolerances are very high something like 1 litre per 1000km so they wont want to know. Think I had added 2 litres to my N52 engine at around 14k

Not worried about it as the car is performing very well and it doesn't smoke at all. Will make a note to mention to the dealer come first oil service though.

Have now completed 7000 miles, oil level check indicates that it is still full, not bad at all if I only could trust it 100%. Computer also states that the first service is due in another 17000 miles, making that 24000 miles between services, good going except at that rate I will only get two services for the £300! my 08 A4 Diesel Cabriolet did 13,000 miles between services at £270 a pop

PS average mpg over the 7000 miles is 37.1, pretty good me thinks especially as I am letting it rip when I get the chance.

Do you have a 35i? My average mpg is 26! Not used for town driving either! ;) Mind you on a trip the weekend to London and back on motorways, average up to 30.7 mpg.
