Oil suction pump - LIDL £11.99

Finally got round to using this today to change the oil in Mrs. Hutch's car.

Took about 10 minutes at a guess. Didn't time it but stood there keeping the outlet hose in the can but not submerged to ensure it didn't fall out and didn't get covered in waste oil.

As this was a proper oil change I then removed the sump to see how much oil was left. Well after I waited for about 6 drops I decided to replace the plug. :lol:

Guessing it comes down to engine design, but have to save one of the best tools I've bought in a long time and for £12 saves so much hassle and mess.

do you think this could be used to Un clog my Soft Top Drains ? or are the tubes to big on the pump,

have you tried poking wire up there?

Not if you change it

Using a pump over draining has no effect on the need to change the filter.

Yes I know but people were mentioning not having to get under the car... not sure how you change the filter from the top of the engine?

You'll have trouble changing any E85/6 oil filter from underneath (6 cyl models at least) as they are on the very top of the engine, as is Mrs. Hutch's on her Astra

To late for me Taz, the motors gone, taking it over to a Guy in Harrogate over the winter to replace for £600.

You'll have trouble changing any E85/6 oil filter from underneath (6 cyl models at least) as they are on the very top of the engine, as is Mrs. Hutch's on her Astra

Just looked this up - as I've never thought to change it myself.

I throw it to my local BMW garage for interim changes (£35 an hour here).

While I am impressed that it's so easily accessible, I thought there was a practical purpose for cars to have the filters underneath near the sump - how does all the crap get collected at the bottom of the engine/sump? Do you think this is a case of ease of maintenance over engine longevity by BMW - or is this not an issue with modern engines?

My Astra is underneath, have to crawl around on the ground if you want to change that

My wife's Astra H, 1.7 diesel is on the top also.

Location probably makes no difference, it will be the first think the oil meets after leaving the sump.

I always allow 30 mins with my oil pump because you've still got to get the engine warmed up first

I wasn't including the two hour spirited drive before undertaking the oil change
