Oil light - me again!

So I've had my first proper run out this morning and as suggested got it up to temperature and pressed the button under the speedo/ rev counter.

The display was..........................

(-----)

+ 1.0 L

So my guess - I ain't no mechanic - is add 1 Litre of oil.

Is this correct?

OK UPDATE TIME 3 WEEKS ON.

I should have changed my username to Hans Solo due to the technology of these cars but you live and learn.

I was still getting the oil light UNTIL my mate pointed out press the button at the end of the indicator stalk! DOH! :headbang:

So I have now put 2 lites of SYNER-Z fully synthetic in and the car has said "OK" which is a first for me since I bought it. So my dashboard no longer looks like a Christmas tree.

However,................. when I leave it to idle and warm up thats when I'm now getting blue smoke. Pulls away great, drives great but just when say I'm stuck in traffic and then pull away there is a cloud of blue smoke.

I'm dreading the responses but hit me with them please and put me out of my misery! :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

The display has changed since my last post and was now reading something like this [_ _ ...] so i added 2 litres. The Millenium Falcon seems to agree with me as thats the first time I have seen OK on ANY dashboard!

I’m missing something here, why did you add that much oil?
Rob

Ok, so said mate pointed me in the direction of the button on the end of the indicator stalk that indicated [--...] 2.0L or along the lines of.

I have changed the oil that I'm putting in - not a full oil change - and the car has now said "ok"

It sounds like you’ve made a mistake there, it won’t have said add two litres-it will only ever suggest one litre :o

correct.
mine has popped up ages ago and says add 1ltr.
would not ask for 2ltrs

The yellow oil light came on today and when I checked the level it says +1L. The irony is that I'm going to change the oil at the weekend so I'm loathed to stick a liter of the good stuff in now! I'll probably only do another 100 miles before draining the oil...

Well, thats the longest drive I've had without the dash looking like a Christmas tree.

No warning lights at all.

Pressed the end of the stalk and Millenium Falcon confirmed OK so fingers crossed. However, when warm and pulling away I still get blue smoke.

Thoughts???? Car still runs like a dream!

My thoughts would be there is too much oil in it like everybody else.
There is probably no warning lights as there is no light to say when it is overfilled, only one to tell you when it needs oil.
Too much oil in an engine is not a good thing.

Indeed. Any more than around 8 litres and the bottom of the crank can foam the oil up and fill it with air. Not good at all.

Lucky it's not a 3.0L then! :P

I think it's time to drop all of the oil out and measure it back in or replace it with the appropriate quantity. That's your starting point. Only then can you be confident she's not over filled.

OK! UPDATE TIME!

Car was sorned over winter and back on the road, Still have the blue smoke issue and I'm going to have to bite the bullet and let a local BMW indy sort it out. Its too good a car to let go.

1. I can't sell a lemon onto someone else, thats just not me.

2. If I spunk £**** on it then its a keeper.

Passed its MOT recently with no issues at the BMW indy.

I'm attending the first East Anglia meet this weekend and will make sure I'm the last one to leave

Hi Brian,

Is the issue just the blue smoke or the oil light?

I’m sure someone will be along soon to help diagnose the blue smoke!
