Oil consumption

Hi All,

I have had my z4 since july and love every moment in it. I have done about 3500 miles in it and had to top it up with oil a couple of times. I recon I have put nealy a litre in. Is this normal for a z4 to burn this much?

Tom

Have to take a guess on your engine designation. However, assuming you have the M54 engine, yes it's normal. I've topped up at least 2 Litres over the last 7k miles

I reckon my 2006 2.5si is using around 1L every 1,200 miles (ish). Sounds a little on the high side... cant see any evidence of any leaks though...

Same here.. 1 litre every 3-4000 miles although it has got better as the car has got older. Tesco have a deal on at the moment 0w30 Castrol edge, usually about 14 quid a litre now 7 quid. I bought a few so should be good for a year or so :D

Had chance to test properly - used 1 litre in 1,400 miles.
Sounds high to me - is it down to a leaky seal somewhere? There's never been any evidence of oil leaks...

Nope. Mine is doing around 1300 miles/ltr. Some getting less. Anything more than 1000/ltr considered normal in most handbooks.

about the same for me too

I had no idea there was an oil usage history to the Z4 engines.
I'm obviously a noob here and I am mainly researching to see if I can live with and enjoy a Z4.
So far I've rounded it down to a Facelift 2.5Si

But the oil usage you guys are mentioning as "typical" really isn't acceptable to me.
Or is this usage actually typical?

Don't see this as a downer please, I love the Z4, I'm just a bit shocked at what you're saying.

I'd not let it put you off.... and each engine is different. I put it down to mine being driven like a granny car for the first few years of its life!!

Must admit i'm surprised it uses as much as it does...

Hi All,

I have recently bought a z4 2.5si with 25000 miles on the clock and I´m surprised/worried about the high oil consumption. I cannot give an accurate figure since I haven´t driven the car for a long time but I believe it uses about 1l/1500 miles. What do you think is the reason for this high consumption? Is it extensible to all the n52b25 engines? I cannot believe the rings, cylinder liners, etc...are worn.

Regards,
David

my 03 2.5 105,000 miles hasn't used any oil since the last service 4000 miles and a year ago.....I rarely use it for short journeys though ........

Thus the high oil consumption is mainly experienced on N52B25 engines. If this is a common problem, what is BMW doing to solve it? Shall we create a platform with the affected people to put some pressure on BMW?

2.5si here - ate a litre of oil in about 3k, which is pretty normal for this engine by the sounds of things.

What???????????

You have a zero missing right? One litre top up per 10k miles sounds acceptable but if anyone is putting in 10 litres of oil each 10k then you could be changing your oil 2 or 3 times a year! :o

I have a 2003 3.0 and have covered 40k in the past three years - if I recall I have 'topped up' maybe three times

I have a 3.0si N52, and never topped ip the oil outside of the service interval and its covered 30k miles now.
