Oil consumption

2.5si here - ate a litre of oil in about 3k, which is pretty normal for this engine by the sounds of things.

I guess I'd better qualify that by saying that I'm not sure how much was in there when I bought it; it was just 3k down the line that I had to add a litre.

I have never put any oil in mine. I have just had it changed after a year and 7500 and it didn't appear to use any!

I thought it was normal that the M engines didn't burn any oil and unusual if they did??

my 03 2.5 105,000 miles hasn't used any oil since the last service 4000 miles and a year ago.....I rarely use it for short journeys though ........

Same year & engine spec but on 40k miles, no oil used since the last service 3000 miles ago.

Alpinas are known to enjoy a snifter or two of oil. The M hasn't used any since I bought it in January. (now put 5K on her, almost doubled the mileage!)

Serviced 7k ago and checking the electronic oil monitor regularly, mine has just gone down one level from full. So I think that means it gone through a quarter of a litre in 7k miles.

I have the N52 3.0ltr engine, no oil used in 4,000 miles & still showing full to the mark. Just wish it had a dipstick though, I like to see the condition of the oil. When I first bought it it had 8,000 miles on the clock & was told it had just had an oil change by the main dealer as it was two & half years old. Drained a little out of the drain plug to check the condition & it was like runny chocolate. Oil change my arse, dealer just stamped the book because I had queried it. Changed the oil myself, very easy to do along with a genuine filter just for peace of mind.

The cheeky bar stewards! You are right, they would probably not dare pull that one on cars with a dipstick.

This also spoils that old joke about BMWs having 2 dipsticks (one under the bonnet and one behind the wheel!).
