Officially antisocial

This sounds like bollocks or stupidity to me.

A stock Z4M is silent compared to my previous car (Supra). Even if they thought the car was too loud or you were driving anti-socially they would have to provide evidence and you would have the right to defend yourself in court.

If the car is as Mr BMW intended and passes an MOT then how can it be a Police matter? I have never heard of anyone getting an ASBO for a traffic offence.

well i never! Still the OP should be able to argue his case with a standard car.

Said paperwork would be in the post, will wait and see. Definitely expecting an asbo for me so I get into trouble if I make noise in another car and for the Z so wife better drive it slowly lol. Just bad luck they were in the area and damp still day that probably made the sound carry. Unfair but better than points and only lasts a year. Not been stopped in at least 15 years so sure it will just pass unnoticed, if it can be argued I might though.

In the last link I posted one guy states
"Yes they can do it but they would need to prove with a decibel meter that it is over the legal limit, the limit is 104dB at 3/4 throttle iirc. Once it's had an asbo they can take the car off you if you carry on."
How true or not that is and whether it helps you I don't know, but our cars standard will be well below this limit. Best of luck with it, sounds ridiculously over the top to me.

Hmmm, as someone who lives in NE Scotland with an aftermarket exhaust and a Gruppe M intake, I'm worried I'll get jail time!!

Where exactly did this happen?

I could understand if it was 2am and you were in a boy racer "tuned" civic charging about a town centre, but this story just doesn't make any sense given the fact you were in the country by the sounds of it, during the day and in a standard car, plus the cops were a actually busy dealing with a "proper" offender.

Good links Tom but all of those articles suggest the vehicle involved was modified. If the OP's car is bone stock then it doesn't make any sense. That said, it has certainly opened my eyes about the ASBO issue. Copper would have to be desperate to resort to that kind of tactic.

They can issue a VDRS and give you a week to fix the issue and then get an MOT station to sign that the car is legal. You then take this back to the rozzers to prove you have sorted it.

I'd take this all the way - abuse of power etc. (no pun intended)

..... And they would be getting a bill for the waste of my time in resolving it

Unbelievable

can someone explain the ASBO thing everyone is talking about? American doesnt understand. :| but from what i understand i smell some bull shyt on the officers end... :?

Would be Angus not Tayside, sounds like it is becoming a popular option when they can't prove anything.

It is Angus but it's the former Tayside Police are. They always had a bad reputation for lack of discretion with regards to traffic matters. I've heard a few horror stories, even from some cops too about them going out of their way to book other cops and stuff like that. Might be urban myth, I dunno but I've no reason to disbelieve the folk that told me.

thank you, that clears up a lot :P
if you ask me it was the complete opposite of anti social behavior order. one would be doing others a favor for allowing them a chance to hear/see a z4

Ridiculous. Are they not clever enough to solve any real crimes. Or just too lazy?

Reckon they were just taking the piss and you won't get anything through the post? If so - still seems a bit harsh and not very funny!

I guess it's probably a career-limiting move for the police to do something like that anyway.

If you ever get stopped, ask them that question, they really like that
