Looking at the BMW configurator posted elsewhere (where you can rotate the car 360degrees) it looks a little better. I think the rear end bodywork especially has been raised to allow for the roof mechanicals. I would like to see a few in the flesh but I wouldn`t be interested in the droptop but I`d reconsider if they do a real Coupe with better lines (as is the case with the current Coupe). THe current Z4 Convertible is nice but the Coupe looks nicer (IMO of course)

the cars are too different to compare-yes the coupe is beautiful but the roadster (IMHO) is the orginal and the true sports car!

Like the look of this one. It satisfies my problem of loving the coupe but loving and wanting (ok needing) top down more. I get many compliments on my Z3, stop laughing, it is a beautiful car. Until my beloved Oxford Green dies and the insurance will no longer repair it from idiots vandalizing or running it over while stopped I will be on the road in my Z3, then I will have to go for the Z4. Not crazy about I drive! Agree that controls must be uncomplicated and should not require eyes taken off road to change radio station! Leave the I drive type controls off this car, and give us creature and performance comforts only, PLEASE! Just my .02

how can you guys compare a coupe to a convertible. apples and oranges. put the top down on a beautiful day and wow what a rush even at a stop light, in a coupe what's the change? you don't even have a sunroof.

my two cents.....................................

y is driver side handle not the same as the passenger side? i mean i know the driver side has more buttons, but still, they should be the same on both sides, no?

To be honest, I'm not a big fan of convertibles myself, but for me I just don't like the look of the Z4 convertible!
I never even noticed a Z4 before the Coupe came out. Wasn't interested. It's not that it is a bad looking car to some, but it didn't ring my bell.
Then I saw a Coupe at the dealers and I was sold!! The whole look just took my eye. That rear end and the way they have done the roof looks very sports car. It has a bigger presence on the road than the Roadster. I also like the bigger boot (trunk). To be honest I prefer the present Audi TT, Nissan 350Z and even the Mazda MX5 roadsters to the present Z4 Roadster. Personal taste I guess as I feel the same about the Porshe Boxster or the Caymen. I much prefer the Caymen.

However, I do like the look of the new Z4 with it's folding hard roof (I never have got the reason people like a bit of canvas as a roof myself). Looks so much better with the roof down to the present Z4 (in my opinion) but it doesn't look as good as the present Coupe with the roof up! For me that would be a problem as 90% of the time I would be driving with the roof up!

The reason BMW designed the Coupe was to make the Z4 look more like a classic sports car.

Hey buddy thank god we all don't like the same thing, otherwise it would be boring. I never thought in a million years I would buy a convertible, especially living in Quebec, (mid life crisis, too much money, no mortgage, I don't know.) Went to the bmw dealer, drove the convertible z4 and loved it, wrote a check and have never regretted it since. I store it for 5 months, so every april 1 I take it out starts like a charm and feel like I just bought a new car again. Lambo, Porsche, Audi, all use a ragtop still.....ferrari. I guess because we know it is lighter and cheaper, but most of the time we ride top down, so it we need a top we have it, mind you, it is not as quiet as a hardtop but pretty darn close, I do spray it to keep water and dirt off and I like the way it looks, I cringe seeing people driving with this type of car in my climate with salt stains and all, but luckily I drive and audi quattro in the winter, unbelieveable in the snow....wow.....drove a bmw 325ix not the same quattro much better and no electrics to break, quattro is proactive instead of reactive....another topic.

So enjoy your coupe and I'll enjoy my convertible and work on my tan.

Best to you.

We both have nice cars, and what always matters is what we think of it, after all it's our money and our butt in the drivers seat.

Enjoy the ride.

Dustin

I do like this redesign of the Z.

Of course I will wait for someone to reduce the value before I switch to one.

If you drive a convertible in the UK you die of hypothermia or drowning and the only tan you would get is rust!! (my opinion, others will disagree!) :P

Agree we both have great cars. Think mine was a mid-life crisis thing also! It went well with the motorbike and the young girlfriend I have!

Dustin, agree with you except (and maybe i'm nit picking at your comment) that I doubt the reason y those companies you mentionned use rag tops to reduce cost. I mean, I don't think anyone buys a Lambo or Ferrari with cost savings in mind, hahaha :D

But yah, i believe there is no better driving experience than driving top down. I mean, the nicer the car, the better the experience, but I could be in any cheap ol car that is a vert and I'm sure i would have a good time.

Breaker, i find that in your car, I would have to drive it really hard to REALLY enjoy it. Don't get me wrong, I would have no problem "enjoying" it, hahaha. :driving:

so yes, all Z4s are nice ... i mean i still like looking at the old Z3

oh and i stretched my budget earlier in my life to get into a Z4 ... so is that an Early-Life-Crisis? :P

I must say I dont like the new one. Old design is much better much more simple. With this CC roof concept they made just one more hairdresser's car. Ther is notjing wrong with a convertible with a canvas roof. If you want a convertible you buy a converrible. If you want a coupe you buy a coupe. Z4 is not a french all purpose car. It is a pure fun and pure joy of driving. If you don't need that buy a Peugeot.

If you need a good CC roadster buy an SL! I'm afraid that they destroyd a very good car with this "wanna be luxurios" roadster! But we will see!

What's the definition of a 'hairdresser's car? Because of the metal roof? They say the previous gen Audi TT soft top was a hairdresser car. This was because of the look v.s. handling?

This means I have a BIG problem, I like the looks and better comfort of a coupe. I almost bought a Z4 3.0si coupe last January. I'm sure I would miss my Z4 roadster in the spring and summer. So I have to own them both? I’m afraid that’s not possible.

If BMW speaks the truth, the new Z4 will handle like a sports car. And I believe it will be, even with the extra weight (3.0si e86 - sDrive30 e89 = 95kg). It could even handle better than the E85/86 because of the active M suspension.

Take for example the current M3 convertible. It has a metal roof and is 155 kg heavier than an e46 soft top generation…and is still an improvement.

It's hard to define that, the old design, looks to me more "Macho" :-) But thats just me!

Well, if you have a retractable metal roof it gives more weight to the car, and the problem is that this weight is on the top of the car so the CG of the car is higher, and I don't think that this is good for a sports car. This is probably way the new M3 coupe has an Carbon fibre roof. The problem with current "Convertible" M3, is that they made an improvment with putting the bigger engine, which I suppose efects the handling!

Hmmm, how about a CARBON folding roof for the new Z4 :idunno:

Cost would obviously be an issue (hence only for an ///M version perhaps) but that would give the hardtop with a lower CoG than a metal roof.
