Off up t'North

Off next week to see our friends near Durham - was going to drive but the sciatica I've had now for over 8 weeks has still not improved so we're letting the train take the strain ! Wish now of course that I was in BUPA and could have sorted this out weeks ago . tried numerous prescribed medication , acupuncture , chiropractor . homeopathic remedies etc - all to no effect - currently referred to pain/ spinal clininc but probably will have to wait some time for an appointment knowing the NHS - anyway there''s people far worse off than me. We're looking forward to Cod and chips in Whitby ( superb ), steam railway and plenty of wine and good company.

Sounds good. Shame you couldn't take the zed for an outing :(

I always chuckle hearing Durham referred to as 'up north'. It's south for me

Funny that I always think the same about Leeds/Manchester ect, Northerners my arse :poke:

Having moved South to live in Leeds I still consider myself a northern gal. I still drink proper beer so must be true ;-)

Oh I'm the opposite, moved north from Kent, so everything past Watford was North to me.....however that said I am most definitely a Yorkshire lass now having lived 20 years here and I'll take some of that Timothy Taylor's Landlord :D

I'll be testing you next week on pronunciation of Helmsley and Chop Gate then! Just setting off on the test run 8-)8-)

From where we are Southampton could be classed as North ! Been up there to see our friends a couple of times - went once in November expecting it to be freezing and it was very warm and sunny. We walked across miles of moorland and national parks - knackerd us soft southerners . Sad buggers that we are we visited the village where they filmed Heartbeat - had a great day out One thing we did notice was the miles and miles of stones walls - must have taken years to build and where did all the stones come from? from the fields presumably ?

At the Magpie?

The north Yorkshire coastal towns were a favourite haunt of ours when we lived in Doncaster. At least once a year we'd get a cottage in Whitby, Staithes or Robin Hoods bay. A bit far to travel for us now though.

Magpie was packed out so went across bridge up towards Abbey and found a smaller restaurant but equally good F&C.

Is the Magpie the most famous fish and chip shop in the World

Nope, that's Harry Ramsdens :P

Harry's original shop in Guiseley closed a few months ago - brand sold to some multinational.
 Not happy - had many a sojourn from Leeds to Guiseley to visit the original shop, was well worth the journey. Bet they're nowhere near as good.
another good chippy I remember is up in Fife - the Anstruther Fish Bar. Hopefully that one is still around

Been up here since Wednesday - came up by train - very relaxing . One thing though - its bloody cold !! Our friends are still lighting a fire in the evening and have the heating on !! Turned our's off more than a month ago !

Visited a few places including good old Whitby - had my Fish and Chips !! Been on the Steam Railway - there's some sort of Steam Convention going on all week - hundreds of anaraks lining the track wilh expensive cameras !

Having a rest today - going to watch the Spanish GP - see Lewis is in trouble again although it all sounds a bit petty - Spain just doesn't like LH - hope by some miracle he wins a podium from the back.

Back to civilisation next Thursday if we don't freeze to death in the meantime - nice people up here though even if I don't understand everything they say!

Eeee by eck as like, me Mum was born in Chop Gate with a silent E and a G that that sounds like no other G.

Durham is ever so slightly North of my hometown, but I am a Yorkshireman born & bred, strong in arm and thick in...............
