Off up t'North

Off next week to see our friends near Durham - was going to drive but the sciatica I've had now for over 8 weeks has still not improved so we're letting the train take the strain ! Wish now of course that I was in BUPA and could have sorted this out weeks ago . tried numerous prescribed medication , acupuncture , chiropractor . homeopathic remedies etc - all to no effect - currently referred to pain/ spinal clininc but probably will have to wait some time for an appointment knowing the NHS - anyway there''s people far worse off than me. We're looking forward to Cod and chips in Whitby ( superb ), steam railway and plenty of wine and good company.

Push at the NHS and don't let it rest. It seems the ones who shout the loudest get treatment the fastest. I had sciatica for several months before finally convincing the doctor that sending me home with pain-killers was pointless. In the end the reason for the pain turned out to be more sinister, so make sure you get it checked!

Have to admit this worries me too - I'm tempted to go to the Pain/Spine clinic place in the hospital without the appointment and make an almighty fuss - I really want an MRI scan to find out what is the root cause. We'll off to Greece in a month and it would be nice to see an improvement by then - either way I'm going no matter what !! Fortunately I have none of the symptons that would indicate something really sinister and I know of people who suffer sciatica for many months.
Someone said tell them you have pins and needles down the leg and foot and they will treat you as an emergency for a scan !

Been on the Steam Railway - there's some sort of Steam Convention going on all week - hundreds of anaraks lining the track wilh expensive cameras !

Not so long a 'Mallard' type steam engine was doing a lap of the Forth. I joined in the fun by taking my camera to a station be nosey. Some of the people on that platform were eye-opening. :o I probably made myself look worse by generally skulking around and pretending not to be one of them :D

Thats just sad Just don't understand you wanting to do that,

Now a black 5 I could understand, but a Mallard, seriuosly, common as muck.

A black 5
Black5.jpg

Nosa - FFS although blurred the a4 pacific number clearly ends with a 7 so it's probably Sir Nigel Gresley not Mallard - that's usualyy only got a four digit number ending in an 8 - amateur!

Hope I haven't revealed myself as an anorak ?!

P.s. Black 5s are as common as the muck they used to drag behind them!

Your right, how the hell could I make such an Amateur mistake.
However have to disagree with you on the Black 5, Iwas privelged enough to be on a Black 5 some 20 years ago which made history by having another 5 on the other end

Eighteen black 5 locomotives have been preserved:

In all cases, names are not historically accurate.

In your face 2 coupes :P :P

Son - anyone can copy paste from Wikipedia. Just listen to the chimes of an a4 and tell me you prefer the 5 - pah. ;)

I had no idea there was so much train loving on this forum.

Have you got the ScotRail SuperSprinter numbers there too Steve? :D

The a4 is nice I will give you that, But sorry my lottery win would go on the black 5.
Far more robust and reliable and was the firm favourite of loco drivers
Imagine the a4 is an Audi TT and the 5 is a Z4M, this is where I am coming from.

Carl, I know nothing about trains, I am making this up as I go along but don't tell Tony

At the Magpie?

The north Yorkshire coastal towns were a favourite haunt of ours when we lived in Doncaster. At least once a year we'd get a cottage in Whitby, Staithes or Robin Hoods bay. A bit far to travel for us now though.

Sean

Having lived in North Yorks for four years now, Whitby is by far my favourite coastal town. Lovely scenery and countless interesting shops, although quite annoying when it's too busy!

Yeah was a shame you couldn't make todays run Richard, it would have been like going home for you too. For all others it's Chop Yat ;)
Hearing more about the route it would have been, I used to relatives live in Great Broughton regularly went to Whitby, though I have now lived away from the area longer than I lived there.

Friday I'm off to the Northumberland coast for a week...cottage right in the dunes, pub with own brewery within walking distance...and the Zed.

Mmmmm can't wait!
