Off to look at a p/ex tomorrow

Ive just paid 27.5 for a 57 plate black m coupe - red leather fully loaded. Its only a year old - and hhad like 950 miles on the clock!

Im guessing thats a good deal - im still thinking im going to be losing 8k in another year. Then again the coupes seem to be keeping value better than the roadsters do - at least fully loaded they are.

Oppinions?

sounds a good deal, i paid 30k on the nose in july for mine 57 plate IB, with champagne fully loaded too, but with 2500 on the clock

Yep great service, Ling is completely mad but I suppose that's part of her charm. Prices are awesome too.

So I'd probably be looking at £22k if I was lucky. A 20 grand drop in 20 months. And then I'd have a bit of negative equity PLUS have to shell out up to £3k for the 123d. No chance forget that!

When I bought my '57 reg Roadster 2 months ago I paid £28k for a 6 month old with 3k miles car that was listed new - incl options - at £48,240; a £20k drop in 6 months!

Alas my car will have suffered even further depreciation as an idiot driving a truck swiped the side of my //M cutting a straight line across a two-lane roundabout last week wrecking a rear quarter panel and a rear wheel. Thankfully there was no mechanical damage. I'm currently enjoying the thrills of a Ford Ka 1.3 with a very basic spec whilst waiting for my car to be repaired - I've been told I'll get it back Thursday or Friday this week.

This episode has got me thinking though that I ought to get a 2k run-about for my commuting and park the ///M in the garage for weekends. I do like that I don't worry about where I park the courtesy car and it gets me home just as quickly given the traffic I commute in. I've been toying with the idea of either buying an E30 BMW or leasing a new small car. I adore my ///M and would like to keep it for years to come as it does all I want from a ragtop sports car. I think paying it off over the next couple of years and leasing something for my commuting is the way forward. Once it is paid for I can even entertain leasing new BMW's. I've pretty much talked myself into it, y'know. :D

Ah crap mate - really sorry to hear that. Hope everything gets sorted to your satisfaction (and you get out of that Ka asap!)

Must be honest and say I didn't realise how cheap leasing would be. Its opened my eyes too.

Has anyone noticed the coupes keeping their values better than the roadsters? Is it just me? Are there fewer M coupes around is that it?

Just check for VAT make sure you use the personal leasing page on Lings. Some decent bargains there though. The trick is to lease something with no options required, I just wanted bluetooth and air con which is why I ended up with the Micra, a Smart car would have been much cooler but cost another £75 per month in a decent spec.

Leasing makes sense if you keep it basic (no options, the cost just gets added to the price and divided by the number of months) and you don't go over the mileage limit (can get expensive at 10/15/20p a mile). I've used Ling before and as said, shes mad but her deals are real - you can actually get what she says you can, unlike other sites.

So I'd probably be looking at £22k if I was lucky.

I went to look at a E92 M3 as the dealer said 'we have four new unregistered models, they aren't selling and we will do you a very good deal'. So I went to have a look, and Wood BMW Bournemouth are living on another planet. My car is a 56 plate with 19.5k on the clock

Dealer: I've had a chat with the boss, your car is worth £19k but we can offer you £23k against a new £56k M3.
Me: Hahahahahahahahahaha. HAHAHAhahahahaha.
Dealer: Well where do we need to be? In truth M cars are not selling in the current climate so we are open to offers
Me: Well first you need to offer me more for mine.
Dealer: Unfortunately your car is dropping £900 a month at the moment...
Me: Even if it were
--- A) It won't last forever (Z4Ms at £10k this time next year???)
--- B) Open your eyes and look at M3 prices. Early cars are £33k...
Dealer: I don't believe that...
Me: Look at YOUR OWN website.
Dealer: Hmm, I see you are right, but it's not the same as a new car is it? And you would get less for your trade in.
Me: I can pick up a nicely specced 57 plate car with under 2k on the clock for under £40k and save myself £15-£20k in depreciation.
Dealer: Well really we want to get you into a new one
Me: I'll bet you do! Well again, look around - other dealers are offering over £10,000 off a new one
Dealer: There isn't that much margin in them sir.
Me: Doesn't interest me if another dealer is willing to do it, does it...

At the moment all prestige cars are dropping like stones (check out Astons, 911s, etc), and sure, your car is worth a lot less than you thought...but then if you upgrade so is the one you are buying. If you 'doowngrade' to something more economical and sensible, for which demand is still there, you will lose out big time and its probably cheaper to drive the Z4M for another 20k than lose thousands in trade in, thousands as a deposit on a new car and thousands on depreciation for that one as well.

I think I am going to keep the Z for a while longer simply because hopefully it will go back up again like the Z3M did....and it's still such a good car, everyone loves it, I do wonder WHY I would change it and what for...

Theres no way yours is still losing 900 a month on a 56 plate!

So your going to lose another 10k in a year according to that - yours would be worth 9k... lol.

I reckon 4-500 a month is more realistic for your next year, then minimal loss each month after that (after its 3 years old). I reckon/hope these M's with decent spec will bottom out at 14-15k after 3 years of age and remain there for a while.

LOL you read my mind, was editing to point that out :)

He's just trying it on, proof being the twice weekly messages on my voicemail from them trying to do something - anything - to do a deal.

I do wonder if in a few years time we would regret ever considering selling these though

I was the same Mike, went to look at a fully loaded m3 a couple of months ago which was up for just over 42, week or so later the dealer rang back and offered it at 39.5. Saw it again the other week and it had just been sold @ 36. The dealer oringally laughed at my 35k offer!

Gonna keep mine for another couple of years I think. Have a crappy Citroen C2 for work etc and will keep the M for weekends and sunny days. 13,000 miles so far, I've bought a second set of wheels so tyres are sorted for the next couple of years and at mileage of about 6,000 a year I've got two years before Inspection due.

At present there is nothing I can think of that costs less than £50K that could replace it.

Will look at extending the warranty next June. Be interested in what it will cost with something like a £200 excess.

Went in to the BMW dealer myself today. Looked at an M3, greeny-silver for 35k. They wouldn't make an offer on my car unless I wanted the M3. I guess 23k for my 08 would be the offer at a push. No chance I'm doing that. So, I'd be cheaper keeping my Z4M as Ionly owe 10k on it, having bought it for the best part of 10 off list new anyway and leasing a micra for a daily run about. No point in selling unless I get totally desperate! The longer I keep it the less it will depreciate. So say £10 in 3 years, well better that as you guys say than losing now the best part of 15k and then losing on something else.

scotia_steve74, how old was the M3 ?? Talking of depreciate.

2007 I think, only 2k miles or something. Spotted an M6 for late 20's - market must have gone to pot!

Best keep what you've got if you can I think after reviewing things. It would be cheaper to lease a small car on that website listed above than lose so much on selling the Z! Only thing that could tempt me would be a 21k 996 facelift i spotted but that's trading a new car for a 7 year old one!
