I'll take mine out for a blast this weekend and post some more vids, both inside and put. I can't thank Exdos enough for doing this and inspiring me to do mine (well, it was an exhaust shop not me).

I'm always amused when people talk of "pops and crackles" coming from the exhausts of S54 engines. As soon as you lift off the throttle of a "drive by wire" to a fuel-injected engine (i.e. S54) , the fueling is cut instantly, therefore there is no fuel over-run to create such pops and crackles as there might be with a carburetted engine with a throttle cable.

At the moment, many F1 fans are moaning about the lack of noise from the new turbo engines used in the latest F1 cars: the reason why they are so quiet in comparison to the previous normally aspirated engines, is all down to the different sound characteristics of different engines. No matter what the F1 engineers might do, the new cars will never sound like the previous generation F1 cars. Likewise, a S54 engine will always sound like a S54 engine: it can be made to sound louder and also have a drone, but it can't be made to sound like an American muscle car. You can't make a violin sound like a double-bass, but I'm happy for anyone to prove me wrong.

Morning John, I can assure you mine pops and crackles now with the mod (although just in the garage, not driven it under load yet).

Just look at videos of the new F Type and Porsche Boxster, plenty of pops and crackles going on there and they are all drive by wire.

Jimmybell,

I've just had a watch/listen to Dalecan's video and his exhaust sounds great: it's definitely more characterful (i.e. louder than OEM) but I wouldn't say it pops and crackles. Here's a link to couple of videos of mine, this first one is of my Z3MC (S54 engine) with completely gutted exhausts: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lms43vxfz30 and this next one is of my Z4MC with my silencer mod and my modified air-intake: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZaDO7NbN_Y

gwatson,

Graeme, I agree that the video does show that car exhaust does have lots of pops and crackles. For it to do that, there must be fuel randomly injected when the throttle is closed. Perhaps this is a result of deliberate mapping on behalf of the manufacturers to give owners the pos and crackles that they seem to crave? It certainly doesn't happen like that with any of the BMW models with aftermarket silencers fitted with S54 engines with OEM ECU maps that I've heard.

the f-type is actually TUNED to do this...

ESS, evolve, BPM all offer specific TUNES thats have this "feature" , mine kinda burbles but this is definitely something that can be altered via specific tuning.....

Thanks for that. That's what I thought. My point is; swapping silencers doesn't produce pops and crackles if the car doesn't produce pops and crackles with OEM silencers.

Just a thought - has anyone tried doing before/after comparisons of volume levels?

I think there's a good simple iphone app that can give a reading.

Got the idea from this vid - which is interesting. Suggests the perforated tubing numbs some sound, i wonder what a full straight pipe would sound like?

I've been messing about with modding OEM exhaust systems for a few years now and tried all manner of different configurations and I can tell you a straight through pipe will drive you mad and deaf.

Yeap, I started mine in the garage when the silencers were away, made me giggle for about 20 seconds, but was incredibly loud at just idle, insane when revving. Would be horrendous under load and would cheapen the car in my view.

Hah ok - thanks Exdos. Obviously in Dalecan's pics there is only a short amount of perforated pipe - but he's confident there's no drone so .. should be good :D

I'm impressed with the E92 video.

for anyone thats need further confirmation.... This is a offered tuneable feature, may s/c companies and tuners have been offering it for a while now.... they can even offer a backfire feature which even more hurts my soul.

heres the thread on making your car do it.... exactly like the f-typre ETC.... its all tune related,,, why this is a desirable and payable thing now-days ill never no.....

John, just to add, with the roadster and roof down you definitely hear more burble on the over-run once the exhaust is warmed up, than with the roof up or I assume in a coupe. So if the exhaust is louder, I would expect the sound of that to be increased.

I'm not saying it's going to be shooting flames :P

I'd definitely concede a roadster likely gets the benefit of extra noise to offset getting cold and wet so much.

Your discs arrived? Vids Vids Vids :D

Roadster gets all the better attributes, looks, sound and ride

Yeah it has :) But need to get the kids down to bed, before I can get out to the garage :(

Will try and get a cold startup video tonight at least! :D
