OE sat nav - yes or no?

I bought mine without satnav as..

1. Dash looks a lot better
2. Navigon on my iphone is great, the few times I actually need one. Easy updates all the time.
3. Wanted the lightest possible Z4MC as they are heavy (got manual seats too). "Every little counts"..
4. Old sat nav prob. outdated anyway?

Now I read satnav cars are actually a lot hotter on the market..
Mine is a keeper anyway, but hypothetically, am I missing out on something?

Not really missing out as all your points are valid, also you can't upgrade the audio system easily so it sum what limits you.

I actually prefer the dash with the nav. I even retrofitted it to my last Z4. Yes it's not the best, but most integrated systems aren't. Combine with an Intravee though and you get added functionality. Also don't have to have a mount and write up my phone each time I want to use nav. I w on add much value but probably make it easier to sell on.

I've got integrated sat nav in mine and I went out of my way to find it as part of my quest to get the best specced Coupe I could find. It's not brilliant - it is after all from 2006 - but it does the job.

I think that many potential purchasers are the same. They want the most goodies on their car as possible.

The other thing for me, is that the Z4 dash can look very basic and bland especially in flipper spec.

As always, you pays your money, you makes your choice.

?

I'd be astonished if you could tell any difference between those with, or without, the extras :?

Alternative view:

Fully integrates so it's a display for audio, maps, computer, mobile phone, etc.
Bang up to date maps available and not reliant on phone signal to work.
Proper hands free solution and integrated to suppress audio
Speaks any commands of navigation from paired phones. Google maps, etc.
Car is more saleable.

Weight consideration - seriously?

Bottom line is there is no right answer and just personal choice..

I'm with CJ on this one. I'd never had nav on any previous car so I'm all new to this and I find it's quite good. I don't often input a destination and ask it to give me directions - that just seems a bit strange with the lady talking to you too regularly plus it counts down to turns and roundabouts both on the screen and in the little mileage cluster, which freaked me out a bit. I generally have a look on google maps on the laptop before I set off and sometimes use the screen, appropriately scaled to count off the route stages. The screen is a great interface for radio, OBC and iPhone. I like the way it breaks up the dash a little and looks perfectly good folded away. I didn't put nav as a must have when I bought it but it is a nice little extra and won't harm when (if...) it comes to selling.

Could be a daft point of view but I kind of feel re-assured by the fact that my Zed has loads of expensive options on it because it could well mean that the original owner had the means to both buy it and also maintain it correctly. It worries me a little when I see second hand Zeds and other BMW models with Flimper specs as I can't help thinking how can someone spend that much on a great car from new and then scrimp on cup holders/leather/nav/cruise etc.?

I know some of these are expensive options but if your budget is really that tight then can you really afford the ongoing cost of ownership?

Not a snobby view as I only buy used BMWs but the number of options for me indicates more likelihood of a previously cherished vehicle.

As for the weight argument, just have a good sh1te before you go for a drive! As I am typing this I am unloading last nights Ruby and I can confirm without a shadow of a doubt that it weighs more than my satnav. In the interests of Forum decorum I will resist the urge to post any photographic evidence on this occasion.

Certainly the case with first owners. Those who spec it well can most likely afford to maintain & service it well. Same in many ways as higher engine models. They cost more and are generally better loaded both as oem and paid for extras.

Not sure that it affects subsequent owners quite so much as they didn't invest so much in the extras.

Eventually the most sought after cars are always the fully loaded largest engine versions. (look how 3.0's sell better than 2.5's and they better than 2.2's, etc.)
Look at any classic car show and they are all the large engine top spec models. the lowly 'L' spec all got crusher.

Finally, try selling a Zed without sports seats, sat nav, xenon lights, etc. and see how long it hangs around.

That's a first ive ever heard for not wanting Nav  Really ? :P Have you removed the glovebox door yet ?
Have you changed your backboxes from OEM ? They weigh crazy heavy compared with aftermarket boxes

I'd wager many top spec cars are bought by people who have more money than sense and know that they will be changing cars in less than 3yrs so actually give less of a toss about keeping it mint/well serviced...

I think the fact someone bought a BMW means they do give a toss :)

I think if its an M a sat nav is a must, having said that i think the sat nav is rubbish and i would much prefer a tom tom

Yes, it's out of date tech wise, but still very useful and up to date maps are out there, which is cool.

It works well for MP3s too. Sure there are better systems out there, but it's still a big plus to have it fitted.

Haha well I think my point of view was bound to be misunderstood. :)
I'd get the stuff that I really need (and doesn't weigh) if I bought it new. So I do have cruise control, cupholders, xenon's etc. But not the heavy options like el. seats (how often would you adjust them anyway?). Christ, the car weighs 1495kg!!

I do have plans to change the backboxes and also the battery setup, getting a gel battery below the floor instead and bin the tire pump etc. :driving:

Its the rest of the car that matters..

The screen is the last thing to take into consideration for me...BMW was putting that screen and tech in their cars in the 90's... And you can tell, it looks like a ZX81 software package has been used..

It's ok if the car you want to buy ticks all the boxes, otherwise meh..
