Odd noise, 57 coupe

Just had my gear box replaced by my dealer, went in with a suspected clutch release bearing after reading this and they ended up changing the gearbox and left the clutch and the release bearing. Must say I have no noise any more so hopefully it will stay that way. I was speaking to the service advisor and said is this a common problem and he said no I had a faulty box, its very rare for us to change the box.

I bought my 07 Z4 Coupe si a couple of weeks ago and mine does this. From reading this thread I take it is normal, I'll keep an eye on the thread to see when BMW come back with a fix!

I was discussing this with my service advisor. He told me that we will need to get the transmission off the car in order to lubricate something ( I didn't understand). This will propably be the solution.(fingers crossed).

I don't get it though, if it's doing no harm other than annoying the driver, what's the big deal? Yeah, it sounds a bit weird, but I'm not worried about it. Turn up the radio and drive it!

That video one is louder than mine I think.

Either way, all cars do this, it's the input shaft to the gearbox rotating at low-load at idle. It is the nature of a manual gearbox with a fairly sporty clutch/flywheel/gearbox.

Sound-dampening materials and proximity will change how loud it is in different cars. Ie, a fwd car where it's all forward behind the firewall will be better than where it is next to the drivers legs in a rwd/longitudinal configuration.

My tyres screech when I corner hard, the engine gets loud when it revs, it's just a characteristic noise of mechanical items doing their jobs.

It's this whinging about normal noises that means BMW have made the new Z4 a lardy lump that is quieter and more refined, but heavier and duller to drive.

Go sit in an F40 or F50 and then experience the full-on noise of almost every mechanical item going, then come back to the E85 and it'll feel like a limousine :)

I agree with you Dave. I love pure cars (meaning cars that don't isolate you from the whole process of driving). But I feel that my car is trying to tell me that something is not working properly. Maybe I have to rest my mind. MAybe I have to get this checked( I did it). I am just asking you because these repairs demand the transmission to get off the car. I need a solution that will work for sure. I just don't want to enter a vicious circle and change everything down there.

To turn a phrase "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

Some of the early purchasers of the twin-turbo 335 complained of some rattles/noises from under the hood. BMW remapped the turbos (noisy waste gate) but then, the folks had turbo lag they didn't have before. Noise wasn't harming anything, but the fix was worse than the noise.

If it sounds like a bb in a soda can, it's fine. If it goes away when you depress the clutch fully, it's fine. Mine gets even a little louder if I rest my foot lightly on the clutch when at idle and in neutral but goes completely away when depressed fully.

Rattly gearboxes not under load are very common, just most cars mask them with weight, or the problem isn't evident because of what I would say are ultimately badly made gearboxes, in that their input shafts, flywheels, and maybe clutches, have too much springing or inertia/weight.

The sportier the setup, the more noisy things get basically.

I'm sure you can engineer the noise out somewhat with very fine tolerances and some super fancy gearbox lubrication system, but why bother for noise at idle on a 'normal' car?

Interesting to note. Get any car that is almost silent in this regard, and fit a lightweight paddle clutch, and listen to it afterwards. It is just the nature of the input shaft rattling around more due to less at idle inertial mass and/or less inertial mass springing (flywheel/clutch plate combo)

Almost 100% sure it is normal. If it develops then it's an issue, if it's just staying the same I'd not worry, and it sounds like ALOT of people have it and it's staying the same, ergo, it's normal :D
