OBD Flap/Cover

Afternoon All

Noticed that this was broken this morning and have put some tape on it to hold it closed so my question is can you buy just the small flap/cover or is it I have to buy the complete panel?

Concur -- Recommend just getting a new Z4!

You've now made me paranoid about mine since I didn't even know it should have a cover door! :x

You'd have to get the full trim piece, but its not stupid expensive for LHD. $67 USD . https://www.ebay.com/itm/155446486652
I don't know how bad pricing is for the evil-Kirk mirror universe RHDs.

Mine also has a broken plastic pin, I think. I was considering fixing it with a metal pin, but the socket is permanently occupied by my OBD scanner anyway so I'm not sure it's worthwhile :)

It’s a complete panel but you can usually pick them up second hand fairly cheap on eBay, just make sure the second hand one doesn’t have a broken flap too!

For a couple of pounds you could glue a magnet bar to each side & condiser it an upgrade?

Would look better than that piece of tape that looks like you found it on the floor from years ago :)

Was thinking just this morning about do something with magnets

Yes was a bit of tatty tape I borrowed from a friend as new car has cleared out my piggy bank

It was a choice between the Z4 and a new kitchen, but the kitchen designer called in sick... :)

I was wondering about Velcro - might work better than magnets and could be used to make/attach a hinge? Some of the plastics are a bit shiny though, so I'm not sure how well that would stick?

I also have some special material that is used to rebuild plastics, but I think the stress line would crack under use again.

The wife put me on a strict budget off no more than 16k and take no finance which is cool as this is a 2nd car and will be used odd times so a win win for me

Found a product on Amazon called "sugru" which comes in different colours and is like blue tak in consistency but dries hard. Used it for various repairs. You may be able to remodel the original tab lock using this.

I have some Sugru. I wasn't sure it would be firm enough for this purpose (there's going to be a lot of movement along the street point) or whether the sugru would attach to the ABS plastic? The original part that's worn on mine is also very small (basically just a thinly moulded ABS plastic stub pin that's broken off). So I'm thinking that eg drilling it out and using a superglued metal pin might be the better solution.

This is the good one:

This is the broken one (basically completely missing):

Like I said, not top of my priority list since the OBD scanner is permanently attached at the moment and I quite like the blue LED effect :)

I'm not too impressed by the engineering here but most manufacturers seem to cut corners on these covers! :)

May be Worth a try with Sugru after roughing up surface and cleaning. Only thing with Sugru is once you open packet it will only last a short. I try to save up repair jobs then complete. What about double sided tape. Protect socket and put tape on flap?

And a result for industrial strength velcro (which I had lying around :))

Took about 5 minutes, closes perfectly and should have some resilience to vibration. I decided only to add it on one side as a hinge, but it could
be used on the other if I find it has a tendency to pop open. The trick is to fold the loop (soft, carpet-like) section over so there's no sticky residue and it doesn't attach to anything you don't want.

I'll keep you posted as to how it holds up on the road. The nice thing with this fix is that I've not made any permanent changes.

That's just to confuse people...

It's a Chinese replacement - the blank was missing from the car and the easy thing was to get a replacement
button to fit. There doesn't seem to be any wiring to plug it into unfortunately so it's just decorative.
