O2 Price rises - fight back

O2 have applied cheeky in-contract price rises and as a long standing customer I was miffed on a point of principle since they are not that competitive anyway. I was unable to get through on their help desk (probably because of the furore in the press) but persisted with the on-line chat support. Having thrown some alternative deals at them and made it plain I was off they quickly buckled offering a £150 cash payment to my account, more data and a couple of bolt-on's to the contract. My £15 SIM only iPhone deal is now effectively free for 9 months.

Worth a try if they are shafting you as well. It seems a weird business model to try and add £1 to a bill and end up giving away over £150 to keep the customer :?

I too was peeved about this, it's a principle thing as mine has 'only' gone from £11.00 to £11.39 pcm.

I've only ever had a contract with O2 so assumed that all the big players did this. I only stuck with O2 as I couldn't be bothered with the hassle of PAC'ing over to GiffGaff who certainly have better deals & use O2's infrastructure anyway.

O2's prices have gone up by RPI, I wouldn't mind if my wages did the same. :(

In my book, they are entitled to raise their prices if they choose, and you are entitled to leave/go elsewhere/bargain etc. That's just business!

(Assuming it's not a breach of contract that is - which it doesn't sound like)

Fair play getting the credit applied - and fair play to o2 for doing it as well.

Orange done this mid-contract to me too

Although the rise was only 1.50 odd it was principle

They can put the price up that was agreed to at the beginning of a fixed contact but I cant put it down?

I'm still on an old "unlimited data" SIM-only contract with O2, so I expect they would be happy if I decided to move.

I had one of those, £10 a month SIM only "not so unlimited" data tariffs three years ago before switching to Orange/EE.

They seemed to take offence when I downloaded over 4Gb of data in a single month and their accounts team sent me a letter threatening to terminate the contract!

The issue is that you take out a 'fixed price' contract and a loophole in the ofcom agreement allowed the process to be hidden deep-deep in the T&C allowed for the network to up the price but you can't leave without penalty. This all changed last week when it was accepted that hiding the loophole amounted to an unfair term so all NEW contracts must have it pointed out up-front and clear that the price is NOT fixed. As a two-fingered gesture O2 applied an increase to old contracts, old actually including some people who took out a contract a week ago and find they upped the price last night!

Unfair T&C & hidden charges are all 'just business' but still shifty IMHO so I hope it's a publicity arse-kicking. :telloff:

Worth checking Tesco out!

It was £21.07 a month - just gone up to £21.63. That gives me:

  • 800 minutes a month (I usually use about 2 to 3 minutes a month - I am not a heavy phone user!)
  • 1600 texts a month (I probably use 50 to 100 a month)
  • Unlimited data (ironically, I probably only use 200-3000Mb a month)

Sounds like I could do better by changing tariff, especially as I've just bought a 4G/LTE Sony Xperia Z Ultra, so wouldn't mind a 4G tariff. I'd prefer to stay with O2, though (I've been with them since 1995, when they were part of BT, and have mostly been happy with the service and coverage that I've had).

I'm planning on going to the monthly Three 'One' plan when my current one expires in a couple of days (plus 1 month notice of course).

  • £18/month (or £15/month on a 12 month contract)
  • All-you-can-eat data (I use it as a dongle at work and use about 25gb a month)
  • 2,000 UK landline minutes
  • 5,000 Three-to-Three minutes
  • 5,000 texts
I'll use my current iPhone 4S for now, and then buy a new, unlocked iPhone 5S (or probably iPhone 6) once I know 4G is up & running properly.

Sky do this all the time, pretty sure I have had about 3 increases from them this year and they try to justify it by saying they have invested in new call centres etc.

I've been on contract since I was 18... last Sept, at 26 I switched back to PAYG and therefore avoid all this stuff, it's not the first time it's happened, I think Ornage did it a few years back?...

I pay £10/month (Vodafone freebeez so technically £9/month) for 150mins, unlimited texts, and 250gb internet

I'd quite like an iPhone but I struggle to justify it to myself when my existing phone (Sony E Experia Arc) does everything I need and has an excellent camera. You could recently get the iPhone 4s for £17 a month with slightly more mins but coming to the decision that until my current phone dies there's no reason to go back to contract (not to mention you can now buy decent smart phones for less than £100 new)

Yeah, this bugs me as well. They did it last year also.

Its not the amount of the increase thats the problem, cos its quite small, but its the principal that gets me.

In the current economic climate, when peoples wages arent rising (unless your an MP or something), then it pee's me off that companies keep turning the screws to get even more out of us.

ok, a mobile is actually a luxury, although many see it as a necessity in modern life.

I know the contract says they can do it, but its not very customer orientated if you ask me.

I'm tied in till October, but will be leaving then.

Do you think its worth me complaining?

Im on Tesco sim only 700 mins 1 Gb data and unlimited texts for £12:50 and I got a call from O2 saying they could better my current deal so I said ok go on then and relayed the above..after a short pause he said thanks for your time and went

As I said in my post I complained and the soft sods gave me a £150 'loyalty' cash-back on the account which means it's free for 9 months plus I had a bolt-on, which means very little to me as I thought that was a place up't north :oldman:
