Numberplate spacing

So the Dept of Transport have relaxed their stance on number plate spacing, but my dealer won't believe this and will refuse to have my plate made to my specifications (bearing in mind i've already paid for the plate to be made)

Having spent a while looking on gov.uk for an answer and reading through INF104 ( http://www.direct.gov.uk/prod_consum_dg/groups/dg_digitalassets/@dg/@en/@motor/documents/digitalasset/dg_067666.pdf )

I'm unable to find where the change is listed. Could anyone point me in the right direction please?
 
Not aware of any relaxation, but interesting to learnmore.

What have they changed, where is it documented (aside on th BVLA site that's always slow to update)
 
Interested to find out how they have relaxed the rules and what you can get away with. I have seen a plate its a bit tenuous.It would only make sense with no spacing and a few black screw!!

I'm not saying that you're wrong, but what leads you to believe that the rules regarding letter spacing have been relaxed?

I know that there was some speculation in the newspapers about it happening last year but I didn't think that anything came of it due to any change needing new legislation - number plate letter spacing is covered by 'Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations (2001)' and any change would need to be passed by parliament.
 
Well there was an article in the sunday times last year (cant for the life of me find the link)

consequently it's been discussed on many forums, but most haven't had a reply recently.

I've given up trying to speak to my dealer about it, just have the plate made up as it is.
 
Do not believe it one tiny bit , as Police , Tax , Dvla etc Cameras will be unable to read then , also by adding black screws etc is a deliberated attempt to change its appearance.

Why on earth would they change the system and lacks laws... we are in the UK remember, think of the financial cost in changing all there software to accommodate endless variation of a number plate.. and as we all know the papers are not the most reliable source of interpretation.
 
No relaxation of rules as far I am aware. just asked my colleagues over in the police traffic dept and they aren't aware of any change. Basically if you get pulled over by the police then they can issue a fixed penalty fines for illegally displayed number plates. Offenders could face a maximum fine of £1000 and in some cases with persistent offenders, the number plate may be withdrawn. People with personalised number plates don't actually own the plate, but have the right to use and display it.
 
I think cars with illegally spaced and sized characters should be crushed

Best place to check is the direct.gov website. I had mine made up last year and was very specific with spacing, I also provided proof to the plate maker and he then checked this himself.

Not aware of any changes in a while though, and not sure why there would need to be.

thanks. I figured so much as that. Given there was a fair amount of talk yet no proof. Many thanks.
