Not going into gear

Hi

I have noticed that my zed is sometimes refusing to go into gear. With the clutch flat to the floor, I'll try to change from 6th to 4th under brakes, for example, and it refuses to go into the gear. As i roll along and get slower, it will eventually let me select the gear (e.g 50km/hr in 4th) This is just normal street driving, not at high revs or anything

I thought it was just me not being used to a manual, but my partner who has been driving manual for over 10 years also encountered the problem.

The only thing I can think of is that the clutch engagement point is so low on the pedal that it isn't disengaging properly.....

Is it just my car or is this a common problem?

sounds like a clutch clearance problem, or a tight pilot bearing in the flywheel center.

can always try bleeding the clutch first in case it is a hydraulic problem.

how many miles on the clock?

Something is not quite right there, mine can sometimes try to delay me changing up at very row rpm in town but not like whta you describe. Have you tried the dealer? Probably best to put the CDV back in before doing that.

This used to be a big problem in the E36 M3, where the clutch hose expanded with heat and wasn't allowing enough fluid through the system for the clutch to fully disengage. I'm not sure if perhaps Zed suffers from the same fault but it might be worth investigation.

thanks guys. Its got 15,000km on the clock and still under warranty.

Hope its not the clutch hose issue - its not very hot in aus at the moment and we can get 40 degree days.

I'll have a chat with the service guy today. Putting the CDV back in will be a pain.

Is the clutch engagement point quite low on the pedal for other M drivers?

If your clutch engagement point is low, this would suggest a hydraulic issue. I've not dismantled the clutch hydraulics on mine yet but I would imagine it is just a basic hydraulic circuit with a master and slave cylinder.

I would start by bleeding the system.

Dont Z4's (not sure if it's only the M) have self adjusting clutches so that the biting point should always be on the same place?

It is self adjusting but there is still some variation from car to car. If however the biting point is near the bottom when it has been higher up before, the chances are that the hydraulics have deterioirated.
