Pointless posting on the niceties of automotive terminology on the US based boards, but on a British one, some of the inhabitants should be cognizant of basic terminology.

If the Z4 were British built, the convertible versions would be drophead coupes, not roadsters (I forget which company made the last true roadster with side curtains - was it TVR or more likely Chrysler with the first run of Vipers?).

I wonder where the Germans came up with their terminology? Perhaps their way of getting back after they'd watched Fawlty Towers or some such?

The term "roadster" as applied to automobiles is American in origin; before World War II, the British equivalent was a "two-seat tourer". The term was used more widely in Britain after World War II, partly through interaction with Americans during the war and partly to make the car more appealing to Americans in the time of the "export or die" policy.

By the 1970s, the term "roadster" was applied to open two-seat cars of sporting appearance or character. Roadsters had become almost as well-equipped as convertibles, including side windows that retract into the doors. Roadsters of that time included the Alfa Romeo Spider, MGB, and Triumph TR4. A roadster is still defined as an open car with two seats, with some roadsters having power tops or retractable hardtops. A few manufacturers and fabricators still offer roadsters that meet the older definitions. These include Morgan, with the windowless Roadster; Caterham, with the doorless Seven; and Ariel, with the bodyless Atom.

The Z4 roadster BMW advertises, at least in North America.

To complicate things, there were also drophead coupes with thicker soft tops and roll up windows (Jaguar offered all three versions in, e.g., the XK120/140).
