Non Runflat Tyres (RFT) Options for a puncture

If I am looking for a spare wheel, 17" is the way I would have to go having the 3.0, so would the spec of the wheel be the same as a 5 series BMW?

17inch 135/80?

or am I looking for 3 series 17"?

Cheers.

interested in the answer to this as well

cheers

So I came across your message and thought I'd answer a very old question in the hope someone can answer mine.
So standard Z4 is 225/40/r18 and 255/35/r18 for the staggered 18" set up. You can work out dimensions from these measurements. To cut a long story short I've done the measurements and they pretty much tally up perfectly with a few mm out. Negligible. This is for the set up you've suggested 135/80/r17. So it makes an ideal spare.

Secondly it may not always be necessary that a 3.0 needs to have 17" to clear the calliper. I think that 3.0i is okay (I know for sure because that's what I have). The 3.0si is the one with larger brakes, so larger calliper, so will require the 17" on these.

My question is for 16" space saver tyres. I've got a 115/90/r16 that I could use as my space saver. Only thing is that measurements don't tally up so perfectly and they don't do any other sizes similar. I'd have to opt for 135/90/r16. So increasing the width by 20mm would it cause issues?

Alternatively am I better sticking to the stock wheel and tyre (115/90/r16) even though the diameter between the 18's and the space saver has a difference in approx. 30mm? Or again is this negligible due to the fact it's only going to be used temporarily anyway?

Thoughts, comments and insight appreciated! Cheers.

I use this Slime kit,https://www.amazon.co.uk/Slime-1800330-Repair-Automobile-Dispensor/dp/B003QHY000/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1469732168&sr=8-1&keywords=slime+tyre+kit, fits nicely beside the battery as per OEM.

First thing I did when I bought a z4 was buy a new space saver and tyre , if you do any sort of mileage , especially in mainland Europe it's a no brainer , if your half competent with basic tools you'll change to the spare and be on your way . Although your passenger will be sat with the spare on their lap , hope it's a front !

I knew there was a reason I bought a Coupe - I'm sure I could get a wheel in the boot! :poke:

Interesting thread as I'm thinking of possibly putting non-RFTs on mine when I need to replace tyres.

A 125/80r17 would look like the nearest match as far as I can tell - plus it would hopefully fit any 3.0, SE or Si!

Has anyone actually ever had to use a kit like these?

Holts
You can buy something like Holts Tyreweld from Halfords, Tesco offer at very good prices some times as well. The cans aren't too big so I carried two.

Fits nicely away in the battery box, that's two cans in there (if you haven't done a custom exhaust mod).

BMW
A similar solution is the BMW mobility kit, as supplied with the M. The mobility kit is a small compressor, powered by the cigar lighter, and an inline bottle of tyre sealant. In the picture below you can see the instructions.

I bought mine from eBay - I think it is usually supplied in a bag. Again, it fits nicely in the battery compartment.

Be interesting to see how good/bad they perform?

I think I'll be going down this route. For the simple reason I know I can rely on myself to sort it out. Tyre sealant is hit and miss. I've had a blow out before and it's split all along the sidewall - no chance a repair kit can even temporarily repair that.

Also I agree that a 125/80/r17 would acutally be a better fit than a 135/80/r17 as Mr Tidy quite rightly pointed out.

TBH I would love to try my Z4 on non-RFTs, but your photo is what puts me off! :o

I suppose I really should get a space-saver if I want to try non-RFTs - the saving over RFTs would probably pay for the space-saver anyway!

Nah that wasn't the Zed! It was my brothers Mini Cooper I was driving at the time. Was a motorway puncture. If you look in the top left (ish) I think that's where it 'burst' the long split is from driving on the tyre?? I think!

Not too sure on brand or anything either. Maybe it was a cheap-o. If you go with a decent brand, you're generally okay.

Hope that puts your mind at ease! Back to non RFT's! :driving:

Has anyone had a puncture and tried to use one of these kits. I had a Volvo V60 that end over a small nail. Tried the inflation kit and the stuff just came out of the hole and did nothing but run down the street.

One thing I may have got wrong was puncturing the bottle, before I put it in the compressor. How much of a difference this could possibly make is a mystery but it does show the bottle being placed in the compressor with a sealed lid.

Either way, I just got decent Greenflag cover as I have no faith in these kits.
