Noise on cold start

Hi everyone!!

I’m unsure if this is a “problem” or just normal :| so thought I’d post it here..

I’ve got a 2014 E89 20i, 13,000 miles ...I’ve had the car about two months.

As you’ll all know it’s been pretty cold recently - I’ve noticed that when I cold start the car, more often than not it makes a mechanical kind of noise which lasts no more than a second.
*EDIT* realised that using the phrase a “mechanical noise” when describing an engine starting isn’t great! .. it sounds like a grinding / pressure trying to be released noise! If that makes sense?!

It only happens when it’s pretty cold and the car has been sat, I.e overnight and I start in the morning. From what I’ve googled it sounds like it could just be the oil not getting round all the parts due to it being cold (please forgive me as I’m pretty clueless with the intricacies of engines etc. :( ) . I don’t know if anyone else has had a similar experience?

The car has a full warranty so I can take it in the the stealers to have a look at. But thought I’d check with my fellow owners first! :)

Thanks!!

Hi, the n20 is noisy on cold start due to its emissions set up (sounds a lot like a blowing exhaust) the noise goes away after a minute or two.
Is that the sound yours makes? :?

Hi Rob,

Yes! That would be a perfect way to describe it!! I guess this is just normal and nothing to be worried about then?

Thanks!
Kish

Direct injection is a bit noisy as well if your not used to it, sounds a bit agricultural is how i would describe it

Is it a grinding noise? Almost like a starter motor when you leave the key turned round?

I’ve had this a few times. BMW have no clue what it could be. Everything lookd health

I’ve had the same on my car after cold evenings when it’s started in the morning it makes a sharp noise then goes away after a split second of the initial start. It won’t do it again unless I leave it over night again.

I recently had the whole car checked over so BMW don’t seem to find any other issues with it. Had the Gearbox Oil Leak fixed lately.

Thanks for the replies guys!... seems like this is just a “business as usual” sort of thing on this engine!!.. phew!.. scared the sh*t out of me when I first heard it!

You could always record the sound on starting & post it on here, just to be sure it’s nothing more sinister.
