I agree I think there is a deadlock mechanism
However there is always the possibility the cables are defective
May be worth getting the door card off to see if the mech can be operated by hand
Being both intrigued and bored I went out to my daily 2.2 (04-plate). Wound down the window, opened the boot, locked the car with the key from outside, disconnected the battery and closed the boot. Reached in through the window. Pulled once, knob popped up. Pulled again and the door opened.
Repeated the whole excercise but this time locked the door with the key using the key in the lock.
Still opened ok using the inside handle.
So maybe there is a fault in the drivers door, which is why I suggested trying the passenger one.
