Posts like this makes me glad the car is parked in a garage, unfortunately leaving it outside seems to generate the roof problem :(
mine lived outside for 5 years and suffered no problems.

tabbie - hope you get it sorted.

Not all cars that are outside have a failing roof, but all roofs that fail are on outside cars ...

Good luck getting it fixed I love having a soft top but the roof failing or being damaged has to be my biggest concern with owning the Z4.

If it is the motor it will shift. I think there is a manual release somewhere. Ours was no problem, it unlocked okay. When you pull (40mm or so) the red loop give it a half twist so it stays pulled.

Climb in the car and heave centrally. (I probably put a 50kg lift into shifting ours.)
Once half raised it is easier to push it from outside the car leaning over the boot.
Don't forget to activate the front clips.

Annoying eh?
Just abit annoying already had the rear spring replaced after snapping, the car only has 27k on the clock :headbang: Dealers had to raise the roof manually took them nearly an hour! Its booked in the 1st of feb best they could do they tell me. Thank the lord for my 12 month warranty...that honda s2000 looks tempting now :fuelfire: :?

One of Vicki Butler-Hendersons favourite cars I believe.......don't even think about it. Its also plug ugly.

As mentioned hopefully once my roof is fixed nothing else should go wrong (touch wood) otherwise the Z4 and myself will part company. The honda S2000 is far from plug ugly, just expensive to run and insure. Bmw messed up big time with the drainage holes on the Z4  :headbang:

Don't let the roof failure get you down. I fell out of love with my Zed when the roof broke, I was cursing it and was almost tempted to get rid of it. :x

But common sense prevailed; I've fallen back in love with my car and the roof motor was replaced under warranty!

Hope you get it sorted, and don't let it ruin the experience of the car.

Of course your right once this roof failure nightmare is sorted I can be happy with the Z4 once again, does'nt help when the dealers drag their feet sorting the problem. Patience is needed on my part

this is the benefit of having a hard top on 6 months of the year

Isn't there something in the friendly manual about having to help the roof on its way after having the hardtop on for a while.

i havent read anything like :o i put the soft top up every few month during winter anyway when i do a full detail. so much easier to polish the hardtop on the ground ( something the coupes cant do :poke: )

My z4 with its failed roof motor was dropped off at Halliwell Jones tuesday evening ready for work to start on it wednesday 1st of feb,no loan car waiting for me which was promised.
(least of my problems now) they finally found me a loan car. Halliwell Jones have just rung me after having the car 3 days to tell me that the roof motor has failed due to water ingress(really 3 days to find that out) :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:
And just to top it off they are trying to tell me it WILL NOT be covered by the 12 month dealer warranty.... am fuming
I was told thursday the roof was off, when questioned about why they did`nt fit a new roof motor then, I was told the roof was`nt removed at all. :x
Any advice is more than welcome am spitting feathers here :headbang:

Oh dear, really feel for you on this one. :(

I think it's one of those times where you may just have to be firm and tell them to sort it. I bet that the warranty was a big deal from them as you were buying it!!! :x

Surely a convertible car with a broken roof is`nt fit for purpose.
I know for a fact they fix the roof motor under their warranty, what trick are they trying to pull :x
There is`nt a service manager in on the weekend to speak to me!!

I'd have to agree.

You need to wait until Monday, (calm down a bit) then go in and speak with both the salesman who sold you the car and his immediate manager and tell them that this isn't the service you were expecting when you bought from them nor is it how the warranty was explained at the point of sale.

That'll do the trick.

Your 100% right I need to be calm, not easy but a must.
Simply did`nt expect to be treated this way, thank you for your reply Dan

If you have no joy with the dealer then get on to BMW UK and complain. This has always helped my cause although of course they don't own the dealerships so cannot force their hands.

srhutch how can I get in contact with BMW UK?
The not very helpful person on the service desk even had the front to tell me about the drain holes...in with the love out with the hate......

they were as much use as a chocolate tea pot when I had issues and kept saying refer to the dealer blah blah blah

Even went to Tim Abbott, who was still useless.

The BMW Dealer I dealt with were a shower of shite and BMW UK were no better either.

I was going to put a deposit down on a GT86 but just found out Im being made redundant from work so might have to keep the Z4 a bit longer yet.

When I had an issue with my E60 a few years back they were superb. Knocked the dealer into shape with a couple of phone calls and I was sorted. Of course, one shouldn't have to go to such lengths over a dealer, but they were effective in my case.

Only had the car 4 months so the good news is its under warranty. If I can'nt raise the roof then god help me if it rains, trying to get it back to the dealers.

As I've said on another thread, regardless of any dealer warranty, the law imposes a six month one on them, particularly with regard to any faults that were likely to have been developing at the point of sale. Trading standards will give you the necessary info and advise how to approach the dealer.

Tabbie.

Just read this and your other thread. It seems appalling you are being treated this way by the dealer. Write everything down as a sort of recorded timeline of events from the moment you bought the car (warranty etc) to present. Just write down the facts, don't use emotive wording. This will help keep you calm and give you a log of all the poor service you've received, which you can refer to when complaining to manager/BMW uk/publicising on forum etc as required.

Good luck, stay calm, don't accept anything other than full replacement and costs covered with some future service thrown in to compensate for the poor way you've been messed around

Huge thank you for all the replys, am sure I shall know more tomorrow.
Will keep everyone updated.

Update- rung dealer service manager 4 times which have been ignored. 4pm today service desk rung me to tell me the warranty will not be covering the roof motor repair and nothing else can be done. Owned the zed 3 months and 2 days when the roof failed,am honestly in shock!
