As title really my roof has just failed to close its pitch black and blumming cold. Its a 2007 57 plate and I recently checked drain holes and use a half cover when ever possible. Gutted to say the least! Tried emergency release but I can'nt raise it again. Had to take my classic out of a lock-up and put the Z4 in instead

Do you need to press the button to unlock it, then emergency release, the manually lift it up?

I would imagine it might take some effort to pull it up manually?

What are the symptoms? Can you hear the motor trying, or is there no motor noise? Is the red light flashing next to the raise roof button? Did the windows lower when you pressed the roof raise button?

windows lower and I can hear a motor locking the roof into place. If I try and raise the roof it simply flashes am sure I have heared a motor but no movement at all. Now I have pulled the Red emergency handle am not sure if its in or out! The roof went extremely slow 10 minutes before thats why I tried it again like a plank. Thanks for any advice, sorry if am not clear also.

Only had the car just over 3 mths so the good news is its under warranty. If I can'nt raise the roof then god help me if it rains, trying to get it back to the dealers.

I've had troubles with my roof in the past. Not sure if facelift models are the same, but the red cable (motor disconnect) simply pushed back in when I reconnected mine. Sometimes if the roof doesn't raise, and you try too many times it locks you out from trying again for 15 mins (I read that on Bimmer Forum, and it ties in with personal experience).

Maybe if you give it another try after checking that the red handle in the boot is pushed firmly back into place?

How much does the emergency red handle move? Am scared of breaking it, but I have tried many times with handle in different positions. I will try and take alook again later. Thank you Adamski.

In my experience, the travel is fairly short. Estimate would be 2" of travel at most. I thought I was about to break mine too!

Mine didn't feel too secure. Yours might be different. I expected a click or something more than the cord simply moving... But it just moved freely

Posts like this makes me glad the car is parked in a garage, unfortunately leaving it outside seems to generate the roof problem :(

Well just been upto the lock-up again and nope it wont budge, can hear at motor locking and un-locking the roof in its down position but thats it. Thought this would'nt happen to me with it being a face-lift model, drain holes checked a month ago and a half cover wrapping it up as much as humanly possible.

this is the benefit of having a hard top on 6 months of the year

Isn't there something in the friendly manual about having to help the roof on its way after having the hardtop on for a while.

mine lived outside for 5 years and suffered no problems.

tabbie - hope you get it sorted.

If it is the motor it will shift. I think there is a manual release somewhere. Ours was no problem, it unlocked okay. When you pull (40mm or so) the red loop give it a half twist so it stays pulled.

Climb in the car and heave centrally. (I probably put a 50kg lift into shifting ours.)
Once half raised it is easier to push it from outside the car leaning over the boot.
Don't forget to activate the front clips.

Annoying eh?

Just abit annoying already had the rear spring replaced after snapping, the car only has 27k on the clock :headbang: Dealers had to raise the roof manually took them nearly an hour! Its booked in the 1st of feb best they could do they tell me. Thank the lord for my 12 month warranty...that honda s2000 looks tempting now :fuelfire: :?

Nah, you don't want one of those rice burners! You have a warranty and you've probably cleared the two dreaded problems now. Roof and Springs done. My cars springs were done just before I bought it and I've purchased a warranty so if the roof does go, it's all covered. Relax and enjoy the great car you own :)
