Nico has retired with immediate effect !

Maybe Jenson will get a seat at MB along side Lewis

Strange one this as he is at the top of his game.Verstapen must be the hot favourite to take the seat.

He's a family man now though. Ikkluns to think about and a few other drivers have done this once a championship was achieved....damon hill frinstance. I think nico's dad keke ploughed on for a couple of years after he got his championship in '82 tho didn't he?

Just seen this on sky sports, doesn't look like any of the pundits had a clue either. Complete shock to them with no one claiming "there have been rumblings" etc. I'd quite like to see Vettel take his place, Mercedes will no doubt prefer a German driver and a Vettel vs Hamilton battle in the same car is something most F1 fans would love to see.

Time to pust some bets on....

Vettel - mercedes
Hamelton - Redbull
Ricardo - Ferrari

I bet there would be some good odds.

So Alonso into his seat?

Then Button skips his sabbatical and wins the '17 championship with McLaren Honda

Understandable decision - mission achieved

Tottaly agree he most likely wouldnt have wone another. He has a young daughter i bet that has changed his thinking. It has for me.

Totally shocked by the news. Nobody expected it whatsoever.

On the one hand, I respect him for quitting at the top. On the other, I think he's a complete idiot and running scared because he knows he'll never get another sniff at the title.

I am certainly not a Rosberg fan, but respect to him for getting out at the top. So many go on too long driving for ever worse teams.

Will certainly be interesting to watch the musical chairs that follow this.

Wow! never saw that coming
There will be some jockeying for position now
Love to see Hamilton v Max

Wonder if Max has had a seat fitting yet....

i can only imagine how much lolly Wolff man is wafting under his young snout. He's got to be the hot favourite surely. Horner must be running around like a headless chicken...

Whilst fans would like to see Lewis paired with Verstappen, Vettel, Alonso, Ricciardo and even Button, I would expect Toto would now prefer to have Lewis paired with a good No2 driver for several reasons. It's often been claimed that the last 3 years of Mercedes domination has been killing F1, therefore, having Lewis paired with any of those drivers above would be more than likely to extend the period of Mercedes dominance producing a continuation of 1st and 2nd positions in races, especially if Toto's rules of engagement are enforced, whereas all the same drivers competing for different teams does not include "rules of engagement", so clashes between the drivers are more likely.

Many fans claim that the Mercedes car is so far ahead of the rest that any of the top 10 drivers could've achieved what Lewis and Rosberg have done, so if that's true, then Toto could get the likes of Hulkenburg, Bottas or Perez as a No2 driver and get the same results, without all the difficulties he's had between Lewis and Rosberg, due to them having equal driver status. Likewise, if Wherlein is thought to be good enough, then he should take the seat and he could be coached by Lewis to succeed him.

If Lewis was treated as the Mercedes No1. (as I believe he deserves) then provided Mercedes continues to produce the best car, they would continue to win the WCC and they could also help Lewis to beating Schumacher's record.

Clearly, being a title contender is a "pressure cooker" environment, which has really got to Rosberg to the point that he can't face it any more. So the way that Lewis copes with it is remarkable. The fact that Lewis enjoys doing other things away from F1 between races and keeps turning up and performing, should silence the likes of Keke Rosberg and Jackie Stewart for their criticism that Lewis doesn't show sufficient dedication to being a driver. I think that all work and no play makes Nico a very dull boy has been proven.

If I had to bet on a driver going to Mercedes I'd probably pick Alonso , not because I favour him just think he will be easiest driver to pry away from a team.

Well another here that didn't see that one coming. :o Sensible decision. He knows it took slightly more that pure driving skill to beat Hamilton this year. I have always respected his mental approach to becoming No1. Much as I wish it was just down to who is the faster driver, it never was.

Get Alonso over there quick. I love a good fight.

Very well put exdos I think you have hit the nail very cleanly on the head.

I would not be suppressed though if another top driver is to be brought in? Lewis might leave!! He seems to have the touch for when to leave and who to join. And redbull are (I think) looking very good for next year.

Their car development has not been strong this year (it normally ramps up towards the end of a season) leads me to believe they have assigned there resorces to next years car. Rule changes that make aero more effective theee strong point! And apparently Renault have a big engine upgrade coming?!

It would be a good time to leave and get a title with another team??

I also might be talking bull crap!!

Good let him ride off in to the sunset with is engineered title the spoilt little twat. If the truth be known he is just to scared to face Lewis on the track again.

A bit surprised, but not really, maybe the thought of next 4yr cycle new car and fight with lewis is too much aswell as bringing up a young family.
But his announcement makes sense from the fact hes reached his goal, not to match anyone but his own goal and you cant knock that.

No brainer for merc, pasqual shoe in for no2 and hamilton takes the lead in car development and no1 driver.
With the level of car they have they dont need to 'pay' for another big name driver, and they dont have internal issues, unless pasqual does a vestappen :)

Still lookigg forward to next year
