Newbie saying "Hi!" & the plan ahead

Hello Ladies & Gents,

Just joined the group after months of reading hints and tips from the forums.

My girlfriend has a 2016 E89 M Sport 18i in white, an amazing example that must have led a very pampered life prior to her buying it last summer. We've honoured the previous owner's love & care (although we can't fit the vehicle in our garage) but feel that the time has come to unleash some of the car's hidden potential. We're in Northamptonshire, in the UK.

First on the list was tyres, the steering always seemed vague and the ride excessively crashy to me. So the original Bridgestone runflats (that still had about 4mm of tread) were replaced last week with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 all round, for less than £400 on 18's. It's made a vast improvement to the way the car drives and handles.

Next up is a remap. Superchips (or rather the company that purchased the Superchips brand) are coming to remap the car this coming Wednesday, at a price of approx £270. I've had lots of cars remapped in the past, mostly VAG but also an Infiniti and Honda, but the promised addition of approx 120 BHP and a huge increase in torque will be the most pronounced change to a vehicle that I've ever experienced from a remap alone. I'm looking forward to this, but my girlfriend is a touch "scared'. I'm sure she'll be fine once it's done, and she does love driving my car, which is quite quick by most measures (Tesla Model 3 Performance).

After this, I'm hoping to recalibrate the TCU to improve the somewhat leisurely pace that the auto gearbox shifts. The increased torque from the remap may go someway to correcting this and I'll know in a few days time, I suppose. If anybody has had their Z4's TCU recalibrated, I'd be very interested to hear about your experience.

She's also keen to retrofit the Apple Carplay/Android Auto unit. Having watched install videos and read the forums, I think I'd rather pass this job across to someone more experienced than me to do. If you have any recommendations regarding where I might be able to have this fitter, I'd be most grateful.

And last but not least.... Golf Tee Mod, I'm not sure it's worth doing on a 4 cylinder engine, but I think I'll give it a try anyway.

Thanks for reading, I hope I can make a useful contribution to the group.

Hi and welcome
I’m sure the remap will be a vast improvement and your girlfriend will soon get use to it :driving:

Hi and welcome to the forum Damo.

I hope the remap goes well, but we'd like to see some photos of the car.

Hello and welcome.
We have exactly the same car (apart from ours is manual) and I totally agree about the tyres. I can't change mine yet as they are almost new.
I'm having mine Superchipped this afternoon (probably by the same guy as you are not too far from me). I'll let you know how we get on.

Some photos. It's a shame I didn't take any at the weekend, the weather has taken a decided turn for the worse today.

Very nice! And very clean.
The last photo highlights the issue that bugged me with mine, running the same wheels as far as I can make out.
The rears seem to sit so deep in the arches.
After much advice from forum members I elected to leave the front as is, to prevent any possible negative effects on the handling.
On the rear I added 15mm spacers which have definitely improved the stance in my view.

Of course, since then I have not taken an equivalent photo to show the difference, but if you're interested I can get one sorted for you.

Pity there's no before and after rolling road to see how the marketing talk relates to the actuals..

Irrespective of that, from what I can see, most of these re-maps on the 20 are very impressive!

Other half called Amy by any chance? :)

From the information I have gleaned, the N20 was designed with one output, 240 bhp. So the "standard" power is this, we've just got strangled ones for marketing and price positioning purposes. Therefore I'm looking at it like it is only an added 20-30 bhp on top of standard; it doesn't sound so scary then. :o

There's a dyno printout on Superchips website for the generic donor car.https://www.superchips.co.uk/curves/E89Z418i.pdf

Here you go, just nipped out to the garage to get you an idea of the rear spacer effect.
Sorry the photos aren't brilliant, bit tight for space and wifey's is blocking me in.

No, she's called Annabel. I know..... she could have got a better plate, but she seems happy enough with it and it didn't cost a fortune.

This is one of the reasons that I went for Superchips.

Yes, the car is in great condition. I think it had less than 10k miles when she bought it last year. Which for a 16 plate vehicle is amazing!

I never thought that the rears sit too deep within the rims, and am of a mixed opinion about the use of spacers (although I've used them in the past on other vehicles). Each to his or her own though, your car looks great.

As you say, each to their own, that's fine. At least now you can see the difference. I would only use them on the back, and made sure they were solid, high quality items. My car has hardly left the garage this year, so it's polish to miles ratio is steadily increasing
