Newbie looking at the E89

Well Ash, you went and saw it, tried it out, found it’s faults and decided it wasn’t for you. That’s better than getting starry eyed and buying for the sake of it

What I’m more curious/concerned about is your summary of the drive, activating the sports mode on 23i’s don’t make a huge difference as I remember. Are you sure a 23i is going to be quick enough for you. I found the way I drove mine I was looking for a bit more power, mainly for overtaking, and was part of the reason for moving to a 35.

I’m with you on the i6 but wonder if a mapped 20i with a custom exhaust, like Ming’s VO, might be worth a try

Thats a shame Ash, Im sure the right car will turn up eventually, at least you can add better stereo to your must have list

Hmm I’m starting to worry now about the 23i but the car I drove previously had way more acceleration and the sound was great. Yes Ming’s car is amazing but it’s too much for me sadly.

I’m looking again at the red M-Sport in Lincoln can anyone check the Vin for the spec? It is WBALM32000E516875

Thanks in advance

The sound of that, the car it is still £3k over priced so no idea why they think its worth £11k never mind the £12k it was up at, maybe they expect people to knock them down quite a bit based on the issues you found so started high.

Acceleration on mine is ok, not great but fine for how I drive, not quite miss daisy but close enough these days.

Andy may be right a mapped 20i may be the way to go if you think that was slow - seems strange that it was so different to the first one you drove or at least so much that you really noticed it so vividly.

I had a similar experience when driving my 30i home last year. I thought there would be a little more theatre involved in the drive, about half way home I stopped thinking about 50 different things (as you do when driving a new purchase home for the first time) and remembered the Sport button, it does make a difference. It just makes the car feel more like a sports car, it revs more and the gear changes seem sharper, the car is noisier and feels faster.

Mr Argyle Andy wouldn’t recall if the button made much difference as he had it taped down so that it stayed only in Sport mode

How about these 30i - https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202106153857393?model=Z4&price-from=7500&onesearchad=New&onesearchad=Nearly%20New&onesearchad=Used&advertising-location=at_cars&aggregatedTrim=30i&sort=price-asc&radius=1500&include-delivery-option=on&make=BMW&postcode=np45xf&page=1

First one has msport seats, second one not but think the first one looks a better car

Hmm still think the 23i will be ok just got to find the right one Sean. Mind you anything after Ming’s superb example seems to pale in comparison lol.

Mings is very nice, break the credit card out and just do it.

The 30i has the same running costs as a 23i so at the prices may be the way to go, just a tad more on ins

The grey 30i looks like a good buy at a sensible price. The 30i has more power and more exclusivity than the 23i sounds better too. Sure 35i will be faster but I never thought my 30i to be slow.

The base 6 speaker system with professional radio is ok but can be quite easily upgraded if the need be.

Took the car out and it felt tight
Was this not a private sale? The owner allowed you to take it out for a test drive without proof of insurance or money in his (or her) hand?
After three months and 20 pages I am beginning to think there is not a car on the planet that will meet your criteria. :(
A showroom condition 10-12 year old E89 with low mileage and all the toys for £10k is obviously not out there. I would say either spend more or expect less

Think he has decided on less and increased the budget in the last few days - so may get something soon

All I’m after is a Z4 in good condition around 10k it shouldn’t be this difficult, my list is a 23i, manual, good stereo and not white, if I lived up north I could have bought 50 but as soon as I can get a day off the bloody things sell. I want to view that red m sport but my next day off is 2 weeks time...

The black se today looked perfect on paper but the scratches were just not acceptable to me, I’m not after showroom condition but there has to be a line.

Ash, if you are not happy now then no point buying it as you will be pee'd off big time in 6 weeks time.

Have you spoke to the dealer about the red one

I did go with the intention of buying, I had insurance and hpi report ready but it wasn’t to be, it just wasn’t right.

Yep I’ve spoken to the dealer about the red one and he wants me to visit. Just have to see if it is still there when I get my next day off.

I’m looking again at the red M-Sport

Ash, are either of the 30i’s that Sean linked close enough for you to drive? I personally prefer the grey one but would want to know exactly what they mean by part service history. The silver one, higher miles but FSH and I’m not so keen on some of the mods but everyone’s taste is different.

At the price of the red one I’d definitely be considering those 30i’s in the mix

You’ve said Ming’s is out your budget but there’s plenty of similar cars maybe just a bit older that should be achievable in your budget. That said for me it would be 6 cylinders and I’d be waiting to make sure that I got the things I wanted. As previously said, your test drive today has added an upgraded stereo to you must have list, again something important to me too
