Newbie looking at the E89

They all have Bluetooth for calls eh? a 10 quid usb/aux adapter soon sorts music.. it is worth getting the vin tho to see the full spec
I’ll get the vin number. I just cannot understand why you would have idrive but basic stereo it baffles me.

Ash, as I said at £12k they were trying their luck and even at £11k they are pushing the it, I would have at least a few cars in mind with similar spec mileage that are cheaper on eBay - they will have looked so will know these cars are out there at a better price, just bring it up in conversation.

The car maybe what you want but at the right price though - I would start low as other have said, easy to go up and they may already be expecting £10,500 for it so £10,250 maybe a sweet spot for everyone - remember they have the same issue as you have, long way from anywhere for someone to travel to view and buy, you can travel and view 2 or 3 cars whereas they have one for sale so someone would need to be desperate to travel there to buy it.

Insurance wise no idea why the Msport is so expensive for you as. mine is £202 on 5K miles per annum.

I think that some people when ordering just think that iDrive being such an expensive option it automatically comes with the better stereo and don’t realise that’s a completely separate option they need to tick at more £££’s

The only saving grace is it is better to have the idrive than upgraded stereo as you mentioned it can be retro fitted unlike idrive.

My 23i couldn’t take/make calls and I had a tunsfli (or something like that) for music
That does surprise me, you'd expect that to be standard kit on a bmw in 2009 eh.. i believe thats a tunai firefly you are referring to :D

On the early E89's bluetooth wasn't standard even with iDrive, and even if it has bluetooth don't assume that it will audio stream.... that was another extra you had to pay for! Advantage is that you can get an MMI box fitted to your iDrive and have lots of things like Spotify/Car Play/Google maps and connect to your phone for calls

Definitely and [ref]mr.tourette[/ref], and others have done comprehensive guides how to do this for circa £500 and if you want to go that extra step as [ref]Zed Baron[/ref], says MMI box, again many guides and some members who’ll actually do it for you if you’re not that technically minded

My man maths actually means that with the discount I got I never paid a penny for any of my extras

I did

I was looking at speccing a 718 before I was lucky enough to get the one I got. My budget allowed just shy of £4K for "extras" which did not go far at all.

It’s not the extras I struggled with fitting in, it was me that struggled to fit in  ah well, at least I now know what’s not going to be next

Only cos he couldn't fit any more extras in

I’ll need to correct you there Sean, it’s only because BMW didn’t offer anymore extras

Joking aside that’s where I think the M40i comes into it’s own compared to something like a Boxster. I know the general consensus is the Boxster is a better car but after having built a few virtual ones and tried a real one earlier this week I honestly can’t see the £30k + difference and felt much more comfortable in the G29 compared to the cabin of the 718.

Now I will say this, yes at 6’2 and not small built I realise this makes some cars in this sector challenging and that’s down to me not the cars but the 718 was not a comfortable place for me to be, my head was touching the roof and no matter how many adjustments to seat and steering wheel it just didn’t feel naturally comfortable.

Having owned both, albeit a 30i Z4, for me the Porsche only won in 3 categories, handling, looks and well, it's a Porsche.
The Z4 is a better fit for Lynn and I, she did not want to be in the Porsche if the handling was being utilised and having the bike, it is very rare indeed for me to take the car out for fun.

I loved my 718, bought new (1st ever new car) as a present to myself for my 55th birthday and was a bit of a lifelong dream to own one.

I also love my Z4, for both different and in some cases, the same, reasons. I was never a BMW fan, now got two lol.

Any more extra sand you would need a bigger battery and no room to put cases in the boot after that

My mates got a late 987 (owned it for about the same time as my E89) and I had use of it a while back, it felt more robust than my E89, made everything on the BMW look a bit cheap and flimsy. Where the E89 was the clear winner was running and maintenance costs, even second hand parts are expensive for the Porsche. I really fancied a 981 :)

Well sadly the black SE is not for me...

Good points: great servicing at main dealers, good tyres all round.
Bad points: deep scratches on front plastic grill, rear bmw badge on boot scratched badly, rims all need to be refurbed, heavy scratches on wing mirror, bubbling paint on corner of roof.

Took the car out and it felt tight but sadly the acceleration wasn’t there, (although stupidly I had left it in comfort mode) but it didn’t have the pick up or sound like the car I took out in May, it left me wanting more much more my Volvo had way more acceleration. When I walked away from the car in May I wanted to get back in ASAP this had the opposite effect.

Tried the stereo and it wasn’t very good at all very tinny and a obviously the base model. Lovely guy though and I just wished the car was for me.
