Newbie - Alpina Roadster or 2006 3.0si

Morning all,

I was pointed to the forum by Senwar :)

I have just sold my Audi TT and am off to view a few Z4's (roadsters) this week.

I have 2 questions:

Does anyone have any recommendations or advice on the Alpina Roadster? I have read a lot on the alpina forum however owners are few and far between!

WHat would you pick? A 2004 (54) Alpina Roadster Lux or a 2006 3.0si?

My heart says Alpina my head says get the newer car.... :?

Thanks In Advance,

Jack

Alpina is rarer of course, but has no warranty. The 2006 will have warranty (assuming it is not a January 2006 car ...).

Alpina is pre-facelift, the 2006 is post.

Alpina is rather more heavy on the fuel and I think the maintenance will be more frequent and more expensive.

I would not really know what to suggest as the cars are so different.

Alpina!

If your budget lands you in that territory it is a fantastic choice imho... the extra power/torque and specialness make it the ultimate Z4 to aim for outside the racey M models.

Thanks for the advice so far!

It is actually better on fuel than a Z4M and the servicing is not bad at all.

Insurance is also cheaper than a Z4M... Go figure?

I will report back after my test drive today, off to drive one of only 6 Red RHD Lux models 8)

Alpina if you can afford the extra expenses it will generate (no warrany, engine maintenance/repair, etc...) But exclusivity is assured.

I would (most would if this was THERE cash) get the 3.0si. Thats an HONEST answer!!!!! Remember, itsalodamoney.

The Alpina was(is) nice but i think newer is money better spent.

being rarer the alpina will hold it's value better and is also further down the depreciation curve - is resale value important?

Alpina is nice, but you have to plan for higher maintenance costs. Will this be a daily driver?

When the Ultimate Drive came through my town, someone had *bent* the wheel on the Alpina B7. A set of wheels and tires for that car cost more than many "economy" imports (my service adviser said in the $16K range!!!!!!!!!!) The Z wouldn't be *that* expensive, but definitely more than the 3.0Si.

Drive 'em both and let what you're willing to pay be your guide.

I think the majority vote up to now disagrees with you.

I personally would go for the Alpina. The rarity of the car will help it keep its value and you get a great interior too.

On the basis the cars are of similar mileage the Alpina would be my chioce too. Further, I agree and would also expect it to retain its value better.

Late Alpina Lux with warranty.

Ok lots of replies! Thank you!

Just back from test driving...

The drive was excellent and the engine is very torquey (sp)

I think I prefer it to the 3.0si already (been a passenger in the 3.0) I can get warranty added for £900 from BMW or Sytners also :)

Now for some negotiation! I will let you know how I get on ;)

Got an 04 Alpina and I love it, the engine is pretty bomb proof and had no problems with it yet. I have heard there can be a problem with the sat-nav screen sticking and a problem with the back coils cracking (has BMW suspension on the back and Alpina on the front, the back coils is a problem on most Z4's)

Feels so much different than the 3.0 version (post and pre 06) but it depends what you want out of the car. It comes with basically all the options you can get from the 3.0 with Alpina's own little twist.

Trouble I found is that I was too fussy on the exterior/interior colours so waited so many months for the right one. Theres about three to four hundred Alpina versions around Europe (don't quote me on this) so finding one will be much harder than a normal Z4.

Both great cars so you can't go wrong.

Welcome to the Forum :D

Sounds good.

I'd still get an actual drive in a 3.0si though, just to be sure. Different just being a passenger to driving any car.

Oh yeah..........

Get the lux model if you get the Alpina as they hold their value much better plus you get a lot more extras for your money. Worth a few grand last time I checked but can't find the link to give the difference in value but here's a link with the list of options you get with the lux pack :)

Thanks for the info people! And Elberto thank you also :)

I am off to test drive another on Thursday, a silver one this time. I was happy with the one earlier however there were some bits niggling at me and as I am a fuss pot I want it perfect!
