Car magazine have new pictures and a review of the new z4 this month- still not sold on it yet ! sadly for the us guys the online site doesnt have the pics- only the ones we have already seen.

I can't help being annoyed that they called this one the Z4 too. Loved the way BMW went from the Z3 to the Z4. I'll just have to get used to calling mine the old shape Z4 when people ask :o

I always thought that BMW were a little embarrassed by the Z3 (i loved it personally), and so to distance themselves, called the new model the Z4. Now surely the fact that they are keeping the name suggests it is a brand they are now rightly proud of?

i started a thread on this a while ago as it really annoyeed me too!

Why are you annoyed? :idunno: Are you also annoyed at the E9x 3 series because it's called the same thing as the E46 3 series? :P

Because they could have called it the Z2,5,6,7 or 9 :P
Afterall, it not as if they are ever going to make that many roadsters that they would run out of number so I can't see why they did this.
They have no choice with the 3 series.

I think keeping the Z4 designation is the right thing to do. IMHO when they went from the Z3 to the Z4 they moved the car up a notch in size, price, market, etc.

This time it's a development within the same sector so should carry the Z4 badge.

It follows the same convention as the X5 where the new is called the X5 too, but its smaller brother became the X3. Incedentally I run and X5 too and don't feel the need to preface all conversations with 'the old model'

The reasoning behind it was that nomencalature of the names changed. The Z4 whlist based on the 3 series chassis is a separate model, therefore a '4' in the same way as the 6 series is based on the 5 and the X6 is based on the X5.

What of the outgoing, mad-as-a-box-of-frogs Z4 M? Sadly, there will be no space in the engine bay for a V8, but Munich is withdrawing from big eights in its smaller models. Even the next M3 will revert to a six-pot, we hear..

Anyone else heard this? :o

yea- read the same artice- shame but the 300 odd bhp 3.0 turbo sounds fun! What you think of the pics?

So there are full pictures in CAR? I thought the car wasn't due to be revealed until the 15th.

The new S4 has a 6 pot again whereas the old one had a V8, a trend may be forming for emissions and economy reasons - it seems you can get as much power out of a Turbo / SC V6 with lower CO2, higher MPG and no major downsides. If the M division agree the tech has improved enough it could go the same way, but I will believe it when I see it! I'd be all over a V8 powered Z4M, and its logical to use it -

1) Its a new engine with the development work done, so cost base lower
2) Both previous ZMs have used the M3 engine of the time
3) V8s make me happy on the inside

That's not a very brilliant argument. The Z4 was a new model compared to the Z3 whilst the new Z4 is an evolution of the previous gen Z4 hance they keep the model name. That is the same logic they apply to the 3 Series, not because they have no choice.

Car magazine does not have pictures printed - they are Car's own graphics!

Most reports say it'll use a V8 in the M - including the BMW dealership I use.

Not sure I agree! The Z4 was a straightforward replacement for the Z3 - it's a 2 seater roadster (with coupe offshoot) using the 3-series engine line up and using 3 series chassis components! Yes is slightly bigger, but almost all new cars are bigger than those that they replace. The naming was as part of a complete naming standards re-alingment within BMW.

The new Z4 will also have a change in naming too - it will adopt the X-series naming, whereby we'll see an 's-drive' term instead of straight Z4 3.0 (the reason being was that people who didn't know better started talking about Z430's and Z422's!

I hope they do, but don't forget dealers know very little about model line ups.

He will get a bulletin two months before and thats when he will know.

What kind of moron would do that? Never heard that in my life
