New Z4 owner and not sure where to start

hey, I'm a new Z4 owner, and I am not sure where to start.

There seem to be so many models of Z4, how do I know which is which. Mine is a Mk2 2013 Z4 2.0.

Is there a good place to find out about upgrades. How would I know which upgrades would work on my car?

The only thing I'm planning to do immediately is learn the car. But I hate not having a Google Maps. So I would like to add a screen if possible.

Any ideas how I research this stuff?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Your 2013 car will be the E89 with the electric folding metal roof. If you look through the E89 pages on here and the How-To you should find plenty of information.

I'm sure there are ways of getting maps working, but that's way beyond my capability.

Anyway we do like to see photos of new members' cars on here, so you might want to post some before the photo police appear!

Welcome. :)
A good place to start is by posting some pictures of your new acquisition.
Forum member AnubisZed is your man for all things tech upgrades TBH.

The later e89’s are known as facelift cars & not mk2’s

Hi baloony and welcome to the forum, by mk2 I presume you mean e89 and not e85/e86.
As stated above there was a face lift from March 2013, which had a few minor changes, mainly the headlights and side indicators.
Photos please or it’s not real :D

Welcome to the forum. Photos will be good. With your wish list you will need to give us more info on what your upgrade plans are. Then we can help you spend your money 😂

Great cars. Great forum. You are in good hands👍

Can't help with car tech. Not my bag at all. So Welcome and enjoy the forum. Tis a goodun. :D

lol thanks all. I wasn't expecting such a friendly reception.

Yes, I think it's an E89 "Facelift" version.

@avityesboy I would love a straight 6 turbo one. I'm guessing mine doesn't have a turbo so that's information I didn't have thanks! Send me a link to one. I got it because it has low mileage, but it's defo not as punchy as I had hoped it would be.

I feel a bit weird taking a photo of it but I will get it cleaned since so many of you have asked.

My main priority is to get Google Maps working so I don't get nicked or killed trying to multitask with my phone. Kind of annoying that the charger is in the armrest as that would make powering it a little more difficult. I could just buy a phone holder I suppose. Also a bit annoying it has a blue tooth connection for the phone but not music, ah well, I guess that's the age of the car. But that would be my first priority to change that so I don't crash or get nicked.

It does have a turbo, but only four cylinders. The good news is you can get a remap that gives you the same performance as a 28i without any other upgrades.

This has to be the most friendly forum I've used, which is why I seem to use it a lot!

If your car is a 2013 E89 20i it already has a turbo. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned that a remap should get it to at least 28i power as they have the same engine, just different software. Although the 28i has bigger front brakes. Well until Zedebee posted that.

Still can't help with the tech stuff though - I'm too old for that!

Sweet. So erm.... one of my friends was thinking of getting a remap on an identical car.

If my friend did that. Would you say that it would be fairly safe not to declare that to the insurance?

That same friend was also thinking about getting racing cams because a very long time ago someone told him that it got the most return on investment speedwise. But he has no idea if that is true or not. He was also thinking that might also be something that didn't really need to be declared.

Finally... would any of that have an effect on the traction control etc?

I guess if my friend does that remap he should think of upgrading the brakes too.

Welcome

Hello, BMW charge for everything so it may be a good place to start by finding out what the car has in the way of specification. Find an online BMW VIN decoder and enter your VIN number, it will tell you everything that the car has when it left the factory. Bluetooth, yes, your car will have it, but you would have to pay extra for bluetooth with audio streaming (BMW charge for everything). As mentioned AnubisZed is the retrofit genius (even has his own YouTube Channel). With regards to remapping, tell the insurance company or get your friend to tell them

Yes....if you want to commit insurance fraud and negate your policy.
seriously, though, I have 'toyed' with the idea of not declaring 'mods' on cars (especially a remap as it can't be seen), but it just isn't worth the risk as if an insurance assessor finds it has been mapped when investigating a claim they won't pay a penny and you could be liable for all sorts.

So, [ref]balloony[/ref], as my name was mentioned (thank you Pondrew  ) I'll throw some thoughts in for you :D

Probably the easiest way to add carPlay to the non-iDrive E89 is a simply plug in unit, as B21 posted here...
https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=149871

Now if you wanted something that is a bit more OEM style / semi-permanent then you could go for an Android touchscreen iDrive replica, I did an installation video on that a few years ago now...
https://youtu.be/VC9VFJBDFQM?si=fP4I-CgrjB62RQFc
Now that one is quite a bit more expensive than the other version, and a fair bit more involved in fiting it, but that is down to what you want and what level you feel you are in taking things apart. I do fit these though, and have sorted a few members out with these over the years, so if it's something you'd like but feel is beyond your expertise then feel free to give me a shout

The other option could be a full iDrive retrofit, very involved, over half of the dash has to come out, and not cheap, but it is do-able as I've done it :D

Thanks Pondrew.

Thanks AnubisZed. Have subscribed on YouTube. OH MY GOD a drinks holder video! That's so useful
Thanks for your subcription, always appreciated
That drinks holder is back in stock (I don't sell them) and with other styles available as well, link in the video description

**EDIT** I do cruise control retrofits if yours doesn't have it and you'd like it :driving:

Cruise control would be useful! Far more useful than the "change mode" button on the steering wheel lol. Pesky average speed cameras!

I'll be looking at what can be done, but I'll need to get some cash together first. And I kind of want to do it myself, seems like more fun.
