So I asked since when Audi is reference ? And Audi TT is real roadster with their FWD

Audi announced a few weeks ago that they will make energy recovery system and those things like BMW's Efficient Dynamics got. So they are a few years behind BMW. But they were first with LED strips

so BMW is world leader in cars and technology then :?

Defenetly is more advanced than Audi. Audi announced they will offer "ED tehnology," so they are introducing something what BMW introduced 2 years ago. And Audi TT you mentioned is Golf V with better design and better badge, is this advanced ?

Also Maserati GrandTurismo spyder will get folding hardtop roof. But if you still will want a rag top, I guess cars like Mazda Miata will still have it in future

Now Im waiting you will write that ED tehnology is just additional weight, so you're happy that E85 doesn't have it

I like my car because I like it, the way it drives and the feeling I get, not because of the make

Truth is some makes like hard tops, some like soft tops (Audi, Porshe). As a buyer you decide which you like :D Consumer choice

Looks a lot like an E89 from that angle, don't you think... ;)

You've (accidentally) hit upon a good point here, Mazda did the right thing with the MX-5. They gave you the choice of which roof you wanted; soft top or hard top. Does anyone have statistics for the comparative sales? Because having only ever seen one hard top on the road, so I'm guessing that there isn't the massive consumer demand for hard tops suggested in this thread.

Why they even put a hard top on it is beyond me. The old rag top is lovely and insulated, for sound and heat, imho.

Just seems to be making it heavier and less roomy for no real benefit except less noise (in a bloody quiet sports car already!?)

Z4 by name, not really Z4 by nature.

Can you define what a "Z4" should encompass whippy?

The car appears to have gone upmarket and away from the likes of you and me in order to appeal to those with deeper pockets. Consumer demand obvioulsy, who are we to argue with the millions BMW spend on consumer requirements, denotes the metal folding roof is the way forward. The new E93 looked heavy upon first appearing 2 years ago whereas now it looks the norm and imo the way forward.

Cloth tops will be left for the purist sports cars and cheaper mainstream car models in order to keep cost and weight down. Metal folding roofs are the future.

Yep, and those with deeper pockets buy the SLK... just like they did with old SLK and Z3 etc etc...

The Z4 can encompass what it wants, it is just a name.

As said, Z4 by name, but not by the nature it once was.

Like Tref mentioned, I just hope BMW make a Z2 with a decent zingy 6 pot NA motor, and a rag top. A 'sports car' basically.

Interesting i can see where this is going- NOWHERE. Those of us with old cars(me included) love ours and not too sure on the new design/boot space or whatever. to me i would have to pay twice the money of my MR to get the sdrive35i. That simply defeats the purpose and am happy with my car. i dont think 35i will provide similar performance to M. I love the rugged nature, the drive and the fun. I dont need a posh, comfortable car. I would buy a 5series instead.
IMO Z4 has gone from being a light weight to a middle weight and that bothers me. I might be tempted if there is a M version. Boot space is important as I have just returned from a european holidya for a week with mrs, top driving most of the time. Couldnt have done it in the new Z4 as my wife's shoes would have taken all the space. for now I'm going to keep mine.

I like the new Z4 inside out. I think the E85 interior looks dated now. I really like the RHT, mainly because it is much easier to clean and maintain. The exterior is also better looking than E85 in my opinion.

I have been monitoring the used price of new Z4 on autotrader's website everyday since the beginning of May. I will definitely buy one when the price is within my budget.

They are definetly aiming at the SLK market, but the new Z4 i tried knocks spots of the SLK, but the Z4 is somewhat pricer.

I owned an SLK a year ago and i have to admit as much as i loved the car, i did not have the roof down much. I tend to carry lots of stuff and do a lot of shopping and the fold down roof into the boot is really limiting. Now i have the roof down at every opportunity, if you love the roof down experience you might find the new one difficult in many circumstances. Boot space is very important to me, we went around the dealers when i was moving away from SLK with a large plastic box to see what would fit in. The old Z4 boot space is very small (well small opening anyway) compared to the TT, boxster etc. My plastic box would not go in the M boot  but the drive was so lovely i overlooked it

I have been so surprised about the age range that drives the old Z4. The thing with the old one it has models to suit all ages and pockets and someone in their 20s looks as good as someone like me in their 40s even my Dad looks good in it. Personally the new one seems to be aiming more towards the older market.

Will i get one, maybe in a few years when i have got the M out my system, the interior and toys in the new one is far superior to the old one, but personally for me the new ones just do not quite have that thrill, but not everyone wants the ability to drive around sideways and do track days.

The new one is a stunning car, but do not think it has such a mass appeal over the age range the old one did. BMW have done their research and think they will get better sales from going for the older luxury market, which is far removed from how they marketed the old one. It remains to be seen whether they are right or not.

It is horses for courses, we all choose cars for different reasons, the old one has different benefits to the new one. Think the old one will turn into a real classic. I would be proud to own either, but currently prefer my M.

If you want a new Z4 *with* boot space, buy the 335 convertible... may seem silly, as its boot is just as cramped, but it does have a very practical rear seat, which folds flat... resulting in a huge amount of storage space.

I think this thread has been hijacked somewhat. JonnyI- not the best intro to the forum to be as aggresive and sweeping as u are in your posts- especially as you don't appear to have either an E85 or E89.
The thread is about boot space- which we all agree is pretty poor.

You're saying I don't belong on this forum (e89 subforum) ... Currently I only have F01 7 series, but next month I recieve E89 Z4. So do you stil think I belong less in E89 section of this forum than you ? And Im not aggresive, I think you're aggresive with complaining about everything on E89... Have you seen me writing and complaining in E85 forum ? So who is aggresive now ?

When I read all those bashing posts how small E89 trunk is, I get feeling that your E85 got bigger trunk than X5 without rear seats. Maybe E89 doesn't have big trunk with roof down, got bigger with roof up, but E85 got always small trunk, doesn't metter if roof is up or down

Im not starting an arguement with you JonnyI- I was merely pointing out thta ur intial posts on the z4 forum seem a bit provocotive. All are welcome on the forum- its a fun place to be.
As for the boot on E85- 2 sets of golf clubs, 2 weekend bags and a few small Christmas gifts.
Not bad for a small boot.

Now you've told me another advantage for new Z4 and I like it even more now... when I will go on shopping to buy Christmas gifts for my gf , I will drive with roof down so I won't be able to buy a lot of things 8)

ok.....
Last weekend I noticed 2 things about the z4 boot space.
1room is not regular as the one on my previous z4 3.0Si, but in the end 2 trolleys and some small softecases is the same luggage I was able to introduce on my old one...

2 it's simply impossible to extract something from the boot with roof topdown....just a tin of coke...by tiny hands.

PS:for johnny and paddy wright, about last posts....it's the same thing that's happening on italian forums and elsewhere....old z4fans VS new Z4 fans ....bmw VS mercedes and so on.....someone likes it, someone don't.live with it.

Do not be fooled, us girls have a way of making the most of our shopping trips regardless of boot/trunk size, oh and tiffany jewellery only comes in small boxes and you can get plenty of that in the boot regardless of which model you drive. :D

ALso echo paddys comment - this is a great forum, i have learnt so much and they have all been incredibly helpful, definetly made my Z ownership far more fun and rewarding already in the few months i have had my car.

Thanks guys.

I for one was incredibly disappointed with the size of the loading aperture with the roof down.

I'm a huge fan of the new looks both inside and out, including the way it looks with the roof up, its stunning, but it was a big shock to open the boot with roof down.

Its kind of silly for the motoring press and other commentators to state that this new hard roof is more practical - its CLEARLY not - you have to raise the roof to get anything of reasonable size in or out!! Thats just silly, even with the "comfort access" option. Imagine the wear on the roof mechanism - you have to use it every time you want to load or unload the car!

I REALLY hope BMW produce a soft-top variant or i will DEFINITELY be looking elsewhere for my next car. Shame!

Can we agree that we will disagree? You should all be driving what you love and love what you drive. Isn't that why we bought our Z's in the first place?

The solution is simple, buy a big Volvo estate (station wagon) for family trips and lots of shopping, and save the Z4 for fun. In any case, if you have a family you have no choice but to have another car. Small boot problem solved :D :P

I managed to get quite a lot into the boot for an overnight trip - I just had to close the roof before I could get any of it out. But then I wasn't going to leave it parked overnight with the roof open anyway :)

I have to admit the old Z4 was a lot more convenient in this respect. Ho-hum.
