Went and viewed the new Z yesterday. Stunning machine. I had a wee look in the boot with the roof down, man i was dissapointed. Virtually no space. Now i know that it has a folding hard top that will limit space but i was shocked as to the actual space it left. I suppose thats the benifit of having a rag top as opposed to a folding tin top. It kind of put me off it.

Same here - very disappointed. The boot looked reasonably deep, but access was laptop bag sized at best with the roof down. I think its a lovely car apart from this (assuming I can get the fast one with a manual box).
I think BMW are taking the Z4 'upmarket' to attract boulevard cruisers (a la SLK). I'm hoping they do bring out the rumoured Z2 roadster to rekindle the fire. I'm also hoping the Z2 doesn't look like the Z3 as I've seen in some mockups.
Amusing note: One magazine test listed the fitted options - and included 'through load facility' at whaever quidage. WTF!?!

dealer tried to fob my boot concerns off by saying "oh but you can still get your golf clubs in with the roof down by using the 'through load facility'". He did not have an answer to the fact that I don't play golf...

Ah yes - a dealer did the gold clubs thing with me too - he didn't know what to say when I pointed out that the set he wanted to show me with had no drivers or woods in it. I then pointed out that my current Z4 took 2 full sets of clubs without a problem - he looked a little dejected at that point!
I know it's been talked about to death - but it is a problem from my perspective - granted it won't bother some people at all, but you do notice an awful lot of SLK drivers with their roofs up when its sunny, most likely as they've been shopping! Seems like a bit of a waste!

it is a massive turn off to me- especialy as they touted it as a more practical version of the current z
This forum should be renamed to: Old Z4 fan club and new Z4 hate club. Its really funny this is the only BMW forum where new Z4 is bashed by old Z4's owners. Look even on both pictures on top of this site is old Z4. When I come to this site I feel like Im in museum. 
You said new Z4 is too soft. In sport+ is harder than your old Z4. Even 5th gear wrote that - its too hard in sport+. Now you are bashing a boot space with roof down. When I travell I got closed roof because of wind on highway and with closed roof, new Z4 got much bigger trunk than old one. And when I got closed roof I feel like Im driving a coupe, when you got closed roof you feel like you are in tent.
So enjoy (like Edmunds said) cute Miata with BMW badge on it and please don't stop bashing new Z4, because I really laugh when I read all those bashing threads, its the best comedy Ive seen

There is a wide range of views on the forum between the old and new z and as only one member at the imin has the new one the bias will invariably lean toward the orginal!

I have never said I dont like the new car... I actually quite like it 
And I was prepared for less boot space with the roof down because of the hard top - but you just might as well not have a boot with the roof down

Can't agree with that. Most people hate new model of their cars, but I accept very soon that my car became dated and is time to move forward.

As someone who has ordered a new Z4 I think I might be allowed to comment.
I have to carry round a large Samsonite suitcase for work. The first thing that I checked before any thing else was whether the case will fit when the roof is down and it will. Granted, it cannot be put into or out of the boot with the roof down but I don't see that as a problem as I will not be leaving the car parked with the roof open. I can leave my house, put the case in the boot, put the roof down and drive to work. When I get there the roof goes back up, case out etc.
If you really want to put stuff in the boot with the roof down then add the comfort access option which lifts the roof out of the way but does not put it all the way up.
Both the old and the new are good cars but they will appeal to different people. I don't like ragtops due to the lack of security but equally I'm not a hairdresser so the SLK is out. BMW have finally made a car that fits what I want so I am happy.

It sounds like the new Z4 is designed for you then - it is more of a cruiser and less of a fun roadster - similar to an SLK (yikes!). The roof on the 'old' Z4 is actually pretty damn good and not 'tentlike' at all - serves its purpose for me. We tend to drive everywhere roof down though unless it is cold/pi55ing down (including from the UK to the Alps). I remember one trip through Switzerland in my old TVR Chimaera where it started to rain, not too hard, motorway speeds, we weren't getting wet. Then it got harder. I went faster and we stayed dry. Then the traffic slowed. oops. Manual roof panel stored under luggage = wet 
I actually rather like the new car, and just agreed with the issue being discussed on this thread - the hard top kills boot space.
I was also shocked at the boot space in the new model with the roof down. Whilst it's primarily a problem of access, even taking into account the space left at the back of the boot (i.e. toward the front of the vehicle) it's still noticably less than the previous model. As I bought my car in large part to use on driving holidays in the UK, the ability to take a reasonable amount of stuff with the roof down is a key one for me. My current car just about fits the bill, in that I need to be selective over what I take but not too much so, and a Z4M might be a bridge too far with the battery box taking up room. The new car would definately not have enough room, so I'd need boot rails and a storage box (which I hope will be available as OEM accessories again), which would be galling in a large vehicle.
Overall it's not that the new car is a bad one, it's just less efficient. A folding hard top is a nice idea, but for me it means too many compromises for very little gain over a soft top. And I'm not sold on the security issue; I really doubt you'd be able to get into the cockpit of an E85 with all the metal in the roof. Sure it's a liability for repair bills due to vandalism, but by that token if someone takes a claw hammer to a folding hard top you're going to be faced with a similar bill.

Fair enough on the boot space issue. So this comfort access thingy is just an option? I think I have seen something similar on a Merc S55 AMG and its a good idea.
