New Windscreen Damage

Had my windscreen replaced yesterday (after a nasty stone chip). When the chap removed my old windscreen he managed to do this in the process:

Apparently the cables running along the top were not flush and able to get caught. If you need yours replacing anytime let them know to be extra careful!!

I was not impressed. In the end an automotive electrician was able to repair the damage and all is working ok.

I also requested an OEM screen which was fitted
 
Ouch!!! Perhaps get it in writing to cover that repair if it fails in the future as a result.

Sounds like an excuse to me... 'oh the cables were'nt in right'. They're clearly not used to dealing with high end/modern cars with tech in the screen. Holy crap I'd have been livid. Glad its sorted for you tho.
 
Last thing you want is water ingress through a dodgy seal they might have used and into repaired woring, and cacking up your 20/30/40k zed :sad: Although I'm sure all will be fine.

I'm be livid..

glad its all ok now though.

I had mine changed last year.. luckily i had no issues.
 
At one point they wanted to fit the windscreen and send someone to do the wiring later which would involve removing trim from inside... I could just see clips braking, trim not going back flush etc. etc. so insisted it was dealt with while the window was removed. Luckily I was at work and able to keep the car under cover.
 
Just insist to have the screen changed at your BMW dealer, less likely to be cocked up then.

They will probably use an outside fitter but they will be used to working on BMWs.

The problem with Autoglass and the like they're always rushing the jobs.

Elephant paid for my local BMW dealer to change the screen on my old 3.0 roadster... upon collection:

glass fragments found in the cabin foot wells,
mysterious red stain on the dash and a nice paint gouge on the passenger A pillar.
Most of the scuttle panel clips were smashed to bits or not put back right.

On the plus side the screen was fitted well and OEM.

I dread replacing the screen on my current car...

Bad luck, my dealer is always spot on which is why I would never let anyone else touch the Zeds :)

I had a 320 (AUC) and it had a wind noise whistle from the front passenger A pillar. The windscreen was not BMW one, so in true dealer fashion, they clutched at straws and fitted a new BMW screen!

Didn't solve the wind noise though!
 
The fitter I had said there is only one manufacturer of E89 Windscreens due to the low volume and special design. All of the top/side covers were removed when Autowindscreens fitted mine. The screen itself was removed in one piece with a contraption that pulls a high tensile wire around the edge via some suction clamps and a big crank. Quite a worrying process though! The mirror/rain sensor cover was replaced as the tabs on the original snapped off, but fitter had ordered a replacement prior to turning up.
 
Well it's not quite over just yet. I drove the car whilst it was raining over the weekend and it appears that the rain sensor sensitivity does not work - every setting just does a wipe every 10 secs even in heavy rain. The scroll wheel has no effect if you change the setting either.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is it something that needs to be re-programmed?

Based on this I have decided should I ever need the windscreen replacing it wasnt going to be Autoglass the issue being that they are my insurers default choice , I know you can insist but looking at the small print it says that their (the insurers) liabilty will be a maximum of £250 if another company is used , I would guess thats less than than a third of the cost of a replacement
 
It would be interesting to know what a dealer would charge, and I'd consider paying a couple of hundred towards it for my P&J...
