New wheels for winter? Runflats?

Currently on 108's with bridgestones. Steering is all over the place, tramlining, skipping over bumps etc.

Had the whole rack replaced (needed replacing, pinion was knackered), had a full laser alignment done too, car is still all over the place, even more so than my VX220. I bought the Z4 as I thought it would be more comfortable in winter!!

Question is - is this normal with those tyres? My next port of call was to do diagonal swaps with the wheels and see if it's one of the wheels/tyres that's throwing things out, the only other causes would be a ball joint or either front/rear shocks/springs I would have thought.

The tyres have about 3-4mm of tread left on them. If I find that it's one of the wheels/tyres throwing the car about, is it worth finding a set of shoddy wheels and sticking some winter tyres for the time being? I've read around that winters help a great deal on the Z4. The 108s I have on at the moment aren't in particularly fantastic condition. I was debating getting them redone, but it's insane to have them done just before winter starts I think...

Or, would I be better off just sticking winters on the 108s then when the time comes, whip them off, get them refurbed and stick summers on again? I'm not a fan of runflats so what would you all suggest as summer tyres as well?

What are the options I have for winter tyres? And what size alloys has everyone found best for them?

your answer is in your question . stick a set of winter rubber on your 108's then look for decent new wheels for the spring .
once you try the non runflats i doubt you will go back to them .
there was a recent post on the falken winter tyres .
also dependant on mileage you do winter rubber can be ok all year .
i fitted a set to a lexus 300sportX 3 years ago then sold the car to my father in law who has done 12k since & the tyres are only half worn .

I doubt I do over 10k a year in the Z4.

Depending on how I feel though I may take it up to the other half's place near Chamonix in easter so it's sort of thinking ahead as well.

What are the prices of winters on 18"s like compared to say, 16"s?

I wouldn't know what tyre size to look for on the 16s (in fact, I wouldn't even know what size are on the 18s outside at the moment!).

In addition, would these fit? http://www.tvr-cerbera.net/pics/N37BWU.JPG

They are 16"s from an E36.

Quick bump just for an answer on the above as a chap next door has a set for sale and if they fit I'd ideally like to pick them up.

I don't think 16s will fit on a 3.0i because of the size of the front brakes. I have a set of 103s with winter rubber on so my 108s stay away from the nastiness of winter - they are 17s and they are *just* big enough to fit round the front brakes. Mine is a 3.0Si though so not sure if there's a difference with the 3.0i. Try one before you buy.

My 103s cost £200 from someone on here (in need of a refurb) and the tyres cost me £400. You'll probably pay £600 for winter rubber on 108s, so I'd recommend getting a full winter set and having the 108s refurbed while they are off. JMO though :D

Hmm ok. It seems they will fit according to PCD etc but it was literally just if they would clear the calipers. Will have to so see if anyone else has any ideas I guess. Chap has offered a set of them to me for £55

16s will clear the brakes on a 2005 3.0 but the offset may be wrong. If the guy is next door can't you borrow one to try it?

Offset on the E36 ones is a lower number which if I'm not mistaken means they will sit further out of the arches? Think they are about 5 ET smaller (in number)

I'm struggling to meet in the middle with the chap near me, he's itching to put them on eBay but I don't want to miss them as it's such a good deal! He only wants £60 for the whole set.

Can pick up the Continental TS850's for £80 a pop and it's really tempting me. Just don't want it to look like a tractor!

If there's anyone that knows if it's possible, that would be great, if not, I may just have to make a punt at it and pay for them. Think I will have to shrink to a 205 though if I'm correct in thinking their width is what it is.

I've been using this recently. Some German company helping people save money depending on what tyres they choose. Might help save a few quid on the fuel bill: app.green-tyres.org.uk

Worth a look if you're worried about the cost.

let me know if you get a answer on yours pal, just to point me in the right direction, ill do the same once beemer have had a look at it

Yep, I changed the springs at the rear and it solved it.

Also changed the front wishbone bushes as a matter of course as one of them was bust.
