New wheels - again ...

Just been back to the dealer for the peeling rear wheels. They are going to replace them under warranty again.

Am I just unlucky or are there certain part numbers I should ask for? My previous set was replaced at 3k miles, and now I am at 13k miles and need another set.

It's that witch craft magic you had applied to protect the paint :poke:

guess these havent got that as they have already been replaced though.

Nope, they were unprotected, only wheelwax. Fronts are protected though and those wheels are still fine.

Warranty bloke could feel it was not just stonechips and was asking the usual get-out questions about refurbishment, pressure washers etc.

The paintwork has gone funny on my wheels too. Never pressure washed, but the front left has been refurbed. Can this be claimed on warranty?

These are some photos i've taken. Looks like the paint is flaking in the corners, it's been like that since i got it. I bought it at 3000 miles and now reading 12000.

It's hard to see in the first photo, but the second photo gives you a better idea of what's happening

Which brake pads are you using, some track orientated pads can aggressively eat into wheel paint. :(

Standard brake pads that came with the car. I've not treated the wheels with anything, but I didn't expect them to go like this so quickly. Think i'll pay the dealers a visit and hopefully they'll sort it. Will keep you all posted if I get a result.

and err no, i've not been using brillo pads on the wheels.

One of the front wheels on mine looks not quite right at 7000 miles, I`ll examine it closely when I clean the car. The wheels on my 3.0Si were near perfect at 33400 miles. Seems like the M wheels aren`t too great quality wise? I`ve already mentioned this so will be popping in soon to get some replacements

Mine seem Ok except for one that had been previously repaired, then I scuffed it so it was repaired again. I bought a second set so now I can mix and match :) Well until I get one set refurbished in black!

Wonder if the extended warranty would cover this. Have never checked mine to this degree... Probably fine though or I'd be moaning about it.

Had mine looked at by the dealer today. Apparently I need to wait for the bmw technical manager to decide whether it's replaceable under warranty. It's going to take 3 weeks before I can get an appointment though.

I'm guessing no one else has had anything like what has happened to my wheels?

That looks like an acidic wheel cleaner has eaten into the lacquer/paint.

What do people use to clean them?

Brake dust eating at the lacquer, then using these dwelling acid cleaners on them (wonder wheels is a really bad one), allows the acid to get right into the holes made by the brake dust and does damage.
Maybe it's thin lacquer, but even thin lacquer doesn't just 'melt' away... that looks like chemical or abrasive attack to me.
