alloy wheels question Again ;)

Guys,

was wondering,would 17" alloys from E89 fit E85 or not?I have mentioned this before,I don't really understand the offset,etc. :headbang: the ones I was thinking of are 225 x 45 x 17" x 8 ET29 although if I am correct on E85 the 225 x 45 x 17" x 8 ET47.

From a purely tyre clearance point of view you'd be moving the wheel 18mm closer inboard so would have to lose tyre width to retain clearance. I wouldn't recommend spacers for even a 5mm change let alone an 18mm one.

Using the tyre size calculator you'd have to put 205/50/17 on to get a similar diameter to what you have at present.

So, are you still keen on the wheels which will sit further into the arches and will have balloon profile tyres with a narrower contact patch?

Personally I'd say not worth it.

if you are using ET29, and the stock use ET47 the wheels would stick out further.. not closer!

Ah yeah, I put the figures into the calculator the wrong way round. Slightly bleary headed this morning for some reason..

I'd still say the tyres need to come down to 205 to make that work though.

Forgiving both your's & mine slightly hungover & probably still drunk states this morning...I'm not sure I'm understanding your reasoning for suggesting 205/50r17 tyres, after all they're only a tiny bit bigger than the standard size, while reducing the contact patch as you've already said - or are you solely trying to take the extra 18mm of offset away from the width of the tyre to prevent it sticking out?

17" wheels (i.e. 105, 200, 201s) come with 225/45r17 (with the option of wider 255/40r17 rears).
16" wheels come with 225/50r16.
18" wheels come with 225/40r18 & 255/35r18.

You are presumably talking about the front wheels with those offsets.
The bottom line is that the position of the front wheels with those offsets will be exacty the same as the wheels fitted to my car which are 8.5'' wide with an offset of 35 and fit perfectly.
I personally don't see a problem.
