WLH, Siftah, I think I've had a break through in the sound department!
I bought a Sony voice recorder the other week - ICD-PX820, which wasn't brilliant on its own. I then added an external stereo mic - Sony DS70P, and the result is pretty good IMO (well, for about £30 spent). The sound in the cabin was still picking up too much wind noise for my liking so I tried taping it to the bumper, thusly:

I cobbled together a quick video clip to show the results:

Happy with that. All I need now is an extension cable for the mic so that I can keep the voice recorder in the cabin.
