New UK Road Tax cost for M40i

I find it incredible that the government continues to charge VED by the month not by the day, yet I can tax my car within a few minutes on line. If you purchase a car at the end of the month, you have to pay VED for the entirety of that month; if you sell on the first of the month, that entire month is withheld from the refunded tax.
Iām sufficiently offended that I always try to ensure that my trips to the UK (and so taxing my RS4 at Ā£760 pa) fall within a single calendar month, rather than straddling two months.

The interesting part is that this just make people keep older car running for longer. I have a 3.0 E85 with a supercharger for a bit more fun. Something breaks I fix it, the M54 engine is known to last a lifetime, parts are plenty. The new manual looks interesting but its a silly cost the VED just help with the decision. No point upgrading as it stands.

Yes, garage the first owner, a couple of months old and each with less than a few hundred miles on the clock. My current treasure is the oldest one I have bought as they are few and far between. First one was registered in April 2004 to BMW UK and I picked it up in January 2005 with less than 2K miles on it, next one was registered September 2007 to Cooper Croydon and that had less than 20 miles recorded when I collected it in January 2008. I saved thousands on both of them with no problems.
But since then I've still been buying cars from that era as I wound down to part-time working then retirement!
With the current painful first year tax cost maybe it makes even more sense now?
I was looking at a newer M40 in December and started looking at the road tax rates. I ended up buying an older car with just 15k on the clock, there are plently around. Its a first edition but frankly you cant tell the difference. It was also 20k cheaper than the original car I was looking at. Saved a fortune for the same experience.

Twice over thank you. 30 year Police pension and a 14 year Civil servants pension with the Gambling Commission. I did have a 2 year NHS pension but they offered to buy that one off me and it went towards my current pride and joy 8)Replaced now by a state pension thoughPondrew said:Mr Tidy said:

So your sarcasm is stronger than your financial prowess clearly.
So just for your individual education. The point was that bearing in mind the G29 remains pretty much unchanged from the first edition there was little point in paying more for a newer car. F### all to do with depreciation, and yet achieving the same result. And referring to the original post also saving on the extortionate VED rate.
