New Tax Rates

It's a common myth that the Conservatives borrow less than Labour and that Labour overspend - in fact, in the last 60 years Labour has operated a budget surplus more often than the Conservatives (most significantly under Tony Blair) and paid back more. The Conservatives have borrowed more than any Labour government ever have. We are probably going to be in deficit for decades to come now but looking back Labour has a much better record. If in doubt you can download the data here:

You might ask how the country has not gone bankrupt - the answer is that we have sold an increasing amount of assets (companies) to foreign owners.

Stop reading the bl**dy Guardian!
Are you mad! :poke:

Heading back on track nearly. It does boil my piss that you pay more to tax a car now if it theoretically cost more than £40k new, than a car with the same emissions of the same age! WTF is that all about! :headbang:

Is that a one off initial charge or ongoing year on year at the higher rate? :?

Interesting link but importantly 3 years out of date and does not disprove what I said which examined a much longer period. Good try though

Unfortunately its an additional charge over a 5 year period. From tax year 2-6 of a a vehicles life, so up to its 7th birthday. Some useful info on it in the link below.

It makes some fairly mediocre stuff very pricey tax wise. Like our 320d M sport with a few options for example, hence why my piss is boiling! Its not like we're talking high end Porsches, Bentleys and like here, or even the really tasty BMW, Audi and Mercs of this world. The rationale seems bonkers, why should you have to pay much more to tax a 320d than a similar emissions/size Mondeo/Insignia for example.

Has this all made late 2016/early 2017 cars more valuable.... nope

Due to my 335D Touring being a cancelled fleet order that needed to be shifted, I got an excellent deal on it.
On a PCP and no way am I paying the balloon payment at the end, but even if I did it would only have cost me £36k in total.
But book price is much higher, so I still got hit with the high tax. In my case it's offset by the savings I made, but even so, it's an odd set up.

Death & taxes... the only 2 certain things in life
